100-crore COVID vaccinations and counting: India records a historical feat! Which state holds the highest number?

In what has become a historic triumph in the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic, India has on Thursday breached 100 crore vaccinations and the feat has come in ten months since the launch of the world's largest vaccination drive. The country is all set to celebrate the moment after bracing up several ordeals in containing the spread of the viral infection. India has started the vaccination drive with indigenous vaccines and by the time of crossing 100 crore vaccinations, the country has over five vaccine candidates.

According to the CoWIN portal, a total of 1,00,00,00,153 vaccine doses have been administered so far to the eligible population. The numbers have become remarkable and imply that the country is fighting the pandemic stronger with its vaccine cavalry. India has breached 100 crore vaccinations in 281 days since the launch of the vaccination drive by administering the first dose on January 16. The country has reached 50- crore vaccination milestone on August 6 and in two months, it has touched 100 crores.

The Covid-19 pandemic has immensely tested the medical capabilities of every nation and triggered the health crisis, leaving the countries into solitary confinement. With no vaccines available to treat the disease during the initial days of the outbreak, the global countries had relied on locking up the borders to break the chain of transmission. India is one of the first-in-line global countries that prepared the ground for developing vaccines against the pandemic and started the clinical trials. After such episodes, India had begun its Covid-19 vaccination drive on January 16 with two vaccines - Covishield and Covaxin.

The states had undergone one of the biggest ordeals in the vaccination campaigns- mitigating the reluctance among the people to receive the vaccine. Several awareness were made across the territory to bring the eligible people to the vaccine camp and the drive was unfolded in a phased manner from concentrating on the frontline workers to getting ready to vaccinate the minors under the age of 18. The influx of more vaccines and reducing the vaccine hesitancy had armed the vaccination drive, along with the efforts of health care and frontline workers.

With 100 crore vaccinations, India has become the second country in the world to record more vaccinations while China stands first in terms of cumulative vaccine doses administered with two billion vaccine doses. The United States, which is one of the worst affected countries by the pandemic, stands at the third spot by administering over 40 crore vaccine doses so far. On Thursday, the Union Ministry of Health had shared the news of 100-crore vaccinations. Taking to Twitter, the ministry wrote, "Congratulations India! We are 100 Crores strong against Covid19."  In another tweet, it has said that more than 103.5 crore vaccine doses are provided to the states and union territories so far of which more than 10.85 crore doses are still in stock with them.

Commending the frontline workers for helping the country achieve this feat, Prime Minister Modi had extended his gratitude to them. Taking to social media, the Prime Minister wrote, "India scripts history. We are witnessing the triumph of Indian science, enterprise and collective spirit of 130 crore Indians. Congrats India on crossing 100 crore vaccinations. Gratitude to our doctors, nurses and all those who worked to achieve this feat." On the front of the states with the highest vaccination numbers, the reports say that a total of 21 states across India have administered over 1 crore vaccine doses each.

Uttar Pradesh is at the top of the list by administering the more numbers of vaccines in the country. It had administered over 11 crore doses, followed by Maharashtra with over 8 crore doses. The states like Gujarat, Bihar, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh had recorded over 6 crore vaccinations each while Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Karnataka had administered over five crore doses each so far. The states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Odisha have administered over three crore vaccine doses each while Assam, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand, Punjab, Jammu Kashmir, Telangana, and Uttarakhand have administered over 1 crore doses each.

The Union government has planned to conduct a series of events to celebrate the historical vaccination. The health ministry has said that Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will be launching a song and an audio-visual film at the Mughal-era Red Fort in New Delhi around Thursday noon to celebrate the landmark milestone. It has been reported that BJP National President JP Nadda will visit Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad on Thursday to express his gratitude on the occasion. He will reach Kailash Mansarovar Bhawan at 10.30 am on Thursday and he will be reviewing the functioning of the vaccination centre.
