That ABVP leader, who urinated at woman's door in TN, is now a board member of AIIMS Madurai!

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai has now been surfaced with controversy even before the commencement of its operations and the reason behind the controversy was the BJP led Central government's pick to lead the institute, which would be a crucial medical institute for Tamil Nadu as it would be first AIIMS to be established in the state.

The Central government has named the President and other Board members for AIIMS, Madurai, and when Dr. VM Katoch, the President of JIPMER Puducherry, has been announced as the President of AIIMS Madurai, the Central government has announced the appointment of Dr. Shanmugam Subbiah as a board member of the institute and his appointment has stirred outrage in Tamil Nadu and the Center has been surfaced with fresh trouble after appointing Subbiah to the key role of AIIMS, Madurai.

The main reason for the flak that was raised against Subbiah is due to his identity and his controversial acts. Subbiah is the professor and head of the Department of Surgical Oncology at the Kilpauk Medical College. Besides being an oncologist by profession, Dr. Subbiah has been serving as the National President of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students' wing of the BJP. ABVP is one of the powerful arms of the Central ruling BJP which had organized various protests and the students' body has been filled up with lakhs of students as its members.

Apart from serving as the ABVP President, Dr. Subbiah had recently caught with controversy through his obnoxious act of harassing a senior woman citizen in Chennai by throwing garbage in front of her door and he went to urinate there and through his action, he has earned strong resentments from activists and political leaders in the state. However, the Central ruling BJP had seemingly signaled that it doesn't have any concern for his action by elevating him to be the board member of the AIIMS, Madurai.

After having been harassed by him, the nephew of the affected senior woman had approached the police station and filed a complaint against Dr. Subbiah for his action of urinating before her residence. However, the complaint was later taken back by the nephew after they had faced huge pressure to withdraw the complaint. In her complaint, the nephew said that Subbiah had harassed the elderly woman following an argument between the two over using the parking space in their apartment premises.

The complainant said that Dr. Subbiah had left the garbage outside the door of the elderly woman's residence and urinated in front of the door. The complainant had also attached the CCTV footage in which Dr. Subbiah was seen urinating in front of the door. However, Subbiah and denied the allegations and maintained that this video evidence is fake and has been fabricated and said that the complaint was baseless.

The incident had happened in July 2020 and following the complaint, the Chennai police had booked Subbiah under sections 271 - disobedience to quarantine rule and 427 - causing mischief or damage, of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act. However, the complaint was later withdrawn and months after the incident, Subbiah has now been centered with controversy over his appointment to the AIIMS and after learning the development, several political leaders have been voicing against the Center for appointing him.

DMK MP Kanimozhi had strongly voiced against the appointment and said, "Is this an endorsement of indecent behaviour and also an incentive for other BJP cadres to follow suit?". Congress MP from Virudhunagar Manickam Tagore took to Twitter and said, "Unbelievable action by Health Minister @drharshvardhan. Madurai Thoppur AIIMS gets Subbiah Shanmugam as a member. Kindly withdraw the order and remove him from the committee. How can Dr. Harsh Vardhan justify when the harassment of women is still pending?". VCK leader Ravikumar said, "The accused in the case of harassing woman has been appointed as a board member of AIIMS, Isn't this decision insulting women?".
