The recently released poster of the much-anticipated film Adipurush, based on the epic Ramayana, has stirred controversy as a preacher have filed a complaint against the filmmakers for allegedly hurting their religious sentiments. The complaint was lodged by Sanjay Dinanath Tiwari, a preacher of Sanatan Dharma, at the Sakinaka police station in Mumbai, citing discrepancies in the depiction of the characters in the poster.

The poster features Prabhas and Sunny in armor and dhoti with bows and arrows, Kriti as Mother Sita in a simple sari with her head covered, and Devdatta Nage as Hanuman bowing down in reverence. Tiwari claims that the costumes of the characters are not in line with the Hindu scripture Ramcharitma.

And that the omission of the sacred thread, Janeu, which holds special significance in Hindu Sanatani Dharma, is disrespectful. An FIR has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. Furthermore, objections have been raised on Kriti's portrayal of Sita without vermilion, which Tiwari alleges depicts her as an unmarried woman. The poster was released on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, a festival celebrating the birth anniversary of Lord Ram.

This is not the first time that Adipurush has faced controversy, as the film's teaser had previously drawn criticism for its visual effects and alleged Islamisation of the character Lankesh played by Saif Ali Khan. The film, directed by Om Raut, also stars Saif Ali Khan as Ravan and is slated to release on June 16, 2023.
