From Amit Shah to Rajnath Singh: How central BJP leaders conferred a huge popularity to Udhayanidhi Stalin?

Under the guise of attacking DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, a handful of central BJP leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah had knowingly or unknowingly conferred him a national spotlight that he is now popular in northern states where neither he nor his party have bigwigs. Udhayanidhi Stalin's single remark has sparked fury from the BJP leaders that they have to speak about him to woo voters in the states where he is an outsider.

Udhayanidhi Stalin is the Tamil Nadu Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Development and at a high time when DMK hopes to be a big cheese in the national politics during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP leaders are queuing up to make Udhayanidhi Stalin a nationally known face. It was his remark against the Sanatan Dharma that gave a talking point to several BJP leaders.

Some of the top BJP leaders are spearheading the party's campaigns in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan for the upcoming assembly polls. While speaking to the voters, the senior BJP leaders attacked the DMK leader in a fashion of showcasing DMK as an anti-Hindu party. and they hardly realized that they are reaping audience against Udhayanidhi Stalin in a wrong place.

According to political observers, by invoking Udhayanidhi Stalin's name in irrelevant stages in northern states, the central BJP leaders had also disseminated the agenda of attacking the opposition INDIA coalition. It all started from Udhayanidhi Stalin's remark on Sanatan Dharma. While addressing a writers' conference in Chennai recently, he said the idea of sanatan dharma is against the idea of social justice and must be eradicated.

Alleging that Sanatan Dharma is against equality and social justice, Udhayanidhi Stalin has said, "Sanatana is like malaria and dengue and so it must not be opposed, but must be eradicated." While his remarks went viral on social media, the saffron party has set a field day on social media to attack the DMK Minister and leading the attack, Amit Malviya, who is the in-charge of BJP's National Information and Technology wing, had allegedly twisted the tale and went on to claim that Udhayanidhi Stalin is calling for genocide of 80% of India's population.

Taking to social media, Malviya wrote, "Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamilnadu CM MK Stalin, and a minister in the DMK Govt, has linked Sanatana Dharma to malaria and dengue… He is of the opinion that it must be eradicated and not merely opposed. In short, he is calling for genocide of 80% population of Bharat, who follow Sanatan Dharma. DMK is a prominent member of the Opposition bloc and a long standing ally of the Congress. Is this what was agreed in the Mumbai meet?" BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, "Once again, the INDIA alliance has shown its true face, 'Bharat Virodhi face, the 'Hindu virodhi face'. This is nothing less than a genocidal call."

As Udhayanidhi Stalin's remarks had made headlines, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the DMK Minister's remarks show that opposition bloc INDIA hates Hinduism.  Addressing a rally in poll-bound Rajasthan, Amit Shah said, "They say Sanatan rule will come if Modi wins. Sanatan is ruling people's heart. Modi has said India will run on the basis of constitution."

Amit Shah claimed that the leaders of DMK and Congress are talking about abolishing Sanatana Dharma just for vote bank politics. He also addressed the people of Rajasthan that it is not the first time for the DMK, that comes from the far-south state of Tamil Nadu, to insult 'our Sanatana Dharma'. Ecohing Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda, while addressing the election rally, asked whether Udhayanidhi Stalin's statement is a part of the INDIA coalition's political strategy.

JP Nadda said, "Udhayanidhi Stalin made this remark when they (INDIA coalition) had met in Mumbai to draw a strategy. Is this their political strategy to abolish Sanatan Dharma?. I want to ask Rahul Gandhi, you ran the shop of love, but where are the goods of hate for sanatana being sold in the shop." Union IT Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar said that the DMK leader is a classic example of a 'spoiled brat, a person who has not done one day's honest work in his life.'

"He is commenting on Sanatan Dharma, Hinduism without any worry. Because he believes that his money, wealth and dynastic position put him in a situation where he can insult thousands of Indians and people from Tamil Nadu", Chandrashekhar added. Now, in line with these leaders, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had also said in Rajasthan, "They are attacking Sanatana Dharma. DMK has attacked Sanatana Dharma and Congress is quiet on it. I want to ask CM Gehlot why he didn't say anything. Why is Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi or Kharge not speaking anything. Why dont they clarify what they think about the Sanatana Dharma."

Rajnath Singh further said, "Sanatana Dharma cannot be seen as limited to prayers... Sanatana Dharma gives the message of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and it considers the whole world as one family...The DMK leader should be asked if he has a clarification regarding his statement. The INDIA alliance should apologise otherwise the nation won't forgive."
