Audio uproar: TN BJP leader Suriya Siva is suspended from the party...What's in Annamalai's order?

Days after a leaked audio of the phone call between Tamil Nadu BJP leaders Suriya Siva and Daisy Saran sparked an uproar, the Tamil Nadu BJP unit on Thursday announced that Suriya Siva has been suspended from the party. Suriya Siva had been serving as the OBC Morcha wing chief of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit and the suspension has come when the audio gate put the party on a bad light.

In his order of suspending Suriya Siva from the party, Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai said that Siva has been suspended from all party posts for a period of six months. The suspension order was issued a day after an inquiry was conducted with Suriya Siva and minority wing chief Daisy Saran, over a leaked audio of their phone call in which Siva was heard abusing and using obscene languages against Daisy Saran.

In his statement, Annamalai said that Suriya Siva admitted to bringing disrepute to the party through the phone call. He further said, "BJP is a party that will not tolerate abusing women and even if he says that the issue is resolved, I refuse to accept it", adding that, "If we agree to it, it will be as if we agree that the conversation was right."

In the leaked audio call that was going viral and sparked outrage against the party, Suriya Siva, who is the son of DMK MP Trichy Siva, was heard issuing threats to Daisy Saran. Suriya Siva went on to hurl intimidations with sexual violence on Daisy Saran and when the audio was doing rounds, several women leaders and activists urged the Tamil Nadu BJP unit to take a stern action against Suriya Siva.

Annamalai earlier said that action will be initiated based on the inquiry reports from the party's disciplinary committee. Both Suriya Siva and Daisy appeared before the committee and claimed that, "The audio was not leaked by either of us. We are good family friends." Notably, moments before the suspension, Suriya Siva and Daisy Saran jointly addressed the reporters during which they said they will remain as a brother and sister.

Addressing the reporters, Suriya Siva said, "The conversation was a private one between two people and our leader has said that the party will take action though it is a private or public conversation. Today, we are asked to appear before the committee during which we discussed about the situation during which the conversation took place. We also have given our written statements and while neither of us leaked the audio, it was leaked in some other way. Let the party find who leaked the audio. I have given my explanation and I will abide by any action taken by the party had it found that I have spoken anything wrong."

Annamalai's order of suspending Suriya Siva has come after the joint press meeting of Suriya Siva and Daisy Saran. It must be noted that earlier, Annamalai has suspended BJP leader Gayathri Raghuram from the party for six months after she urged the party to take strict action against Suriya Siva for abusing a woman leader. Suspending Gayathri Raghuram, Annamalai said that she has violated the party's principles.
