Battle against Plastic: TN Govt's new orders to curb the use of plastic items!

With the view of curbing the usage of recycled plastics in its territory, the Tamil Nadu government has passed fresh orders against such usage. The orders were passed by the Tamil Nadu Environment Department in which it has directed all the district administrations to enforce strict measures against the use of plastic items.

According to reports, the orders have come in the wake of the usage of polythene covers, where recycled plastics are being used at several places. The Environment Department has instructed the district administrations to carry out surprise checks at shops and establishments to exhume the usage of polythene covers and to curb them.

Though the state is observing the ban on several plastic items, their supply and usage have been rampant across the state, pushing the department to come up with some strict measures. The sanitary department has planned to join hands with the environment department in the battle against plastic. The sanitary department has decided to prevent the use of polythene covers as well as teacups coated with plastic, straws made of plastic, flags of plastic, earbuds, and other similar items that are being used daily.

It has been reported that the environment department has directed the district administrations to conduct searches across their territories to mitigate the use of polythene and plastic covers, with the support of the district police and health department. Several activists have been sternly urging the state government to levy more penalties on the violators and ensure that these plastic items won't threaten the environment.

News agency IANS had quoted the activists saying that despite the ban, the use of polythene covers has been growing and vendors are buying these covers from other states. They also alarm that the exorbitant usage of plastics has been harming the drainage system and causes water clogging and they added that the government must impose heavy fines on those who violate the orders. It must be noted that a total of 14 plastic items, including one-time use of plastic bags and polythene covers, were banned in Tamil Nadu in 2019.
