CAA agitation: Followed by Kerala, Punjab adopts an anti-CAA resolution!

Followed by Kerala, the Congress party ruled Punjab state has become the second Indian state to pass and adopt an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act resolution in its assembly to showcase the party's consistent voice and agitation against the biased amendment act. The Punjab state assembly had witnessed the long debate on Friday over passing the resolution through which the state had accused the act as a violation of the secular identity of India.

By adopting the resolution, the state's assembly had demanded the Central government to annul the controversial act that would cause discrimination based on the religion. The reports say that the anti-CAA resolution was moved by state minister for Parliamentary affairs Brahm Mohindra and the resolution stated that the CAA which was passed by the Indian Parliament has ignited nationwide anguish and social unrest along with heated protests and added that the state of Punjab has also encountered similar agitations against the act.

The resolution has stated that the CAA nullifies the fundamental and secular rights enshrined in the Indian constitution and this amendment of the Citizenship Act would instigate the religion-based discrimination towards granting Citizenship and would endanger the cultural and linguistic identities of the people.

The resolution had witnessed the favorable votes from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) while the regional party Shiromani Akali Dal has demanded that the CAA would induct Muslims under its umbrella. Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had supported and backed the resolution passed by Kerala and spoke in favor of the resolution.

On December 31st, 2019, the state of Kerala, which is one of the strongest critics of the CAA and NRC, has adopted the resolution moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the legislative assembly and the resolution was adopted by assembling the members for the one-day special session and the resolution was unanimously supported by the ruling Communist and opposition Congress party members. After passing the resolution, Kerala has become the first state to adopt such a resolution in India.
