Congress president Sonia Gandhi's mother Paola Maino passed away on Saturday - August 27 at her residence in Italy due to age-related ailments. Maino was in her 90s and her funeral took place on Tuesday- August 30. The party announced her demise on Wednesday and several leaders including President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi have paid condolences to Sonia Gandhi. 

Sonia Gandhi had left for Italy on August 23 to visit her ailing mother. Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Congress party's general secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote, "Smt. Sonia Gandhi's mother, Mrs Paola Maino passed away at her home in Italy on Saturday the 27th August 2022. The funeral took place yesterday." It has been reported that Sonia Gandhi's children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi also attended the funeral. 

On its official Twitter handle, the Congress party wrote, "Congress family expresses its deepest condolences on the sad demise of Mrs Paola Maino, Congress president Mrs Sonia Gandhi's mother. We pray for the departed soul and stand in solidarity with the bereaved family." Congress in-charge for media Pawan Khera wrote, "Deepest condolences to Sonia ji and the family at the passing away of her respected mother. May God give you all the strength to bear this loss." 

Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot took to Twitter and wrote, "It's very saddening to know about the demise of Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi ji's mother Mrs Paolo Maino ji. My deepest condolences to Sonia ji, Rahul ji, Priyanka ji and all family members. May God give them the strength to bear this loss. May the departed soul rest in peace." 

President of India, Droupadi Murmu has expressed her condolences to Sonia Gandhi on the passing of her mother. Murmu wrote, "Sad to learn about the passing away of Mrs Paola Maino, mother of Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi. My heartfelt condolences to her and her family. May God give her strength to bear this irreparable loss." 

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar wrote, "Saddened to hear about the passing away of Mrs Paola Maino, Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji's mother. My deepest condolences to Smt. Gandhi and her family. May her soul rest in peace." In his tribute note, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, "Condolences to Sonia Gandhi Ji on the passing away of her mother, Mrs Paola Maino. May her soul rest in peace. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the entire family."
