COVID-19: Chennai reports biggest single-day spike with 1,479 cases, nears to hit 29,000!

The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 1,982 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Friday through which the state's tally went past 40,000 by reporting 40,698 cases so far including active, discharged, and deceased patients. 

According to the press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 6,73,906 samples so far including 18,231 that were tested on Friday of which 1,982 returned positive for the pandemic. These 1,982 cases include 49 people who returned to the state from other regions.

19 people came from Delhi, 15 from Maharashtra, seven came from Qatar, two each from Kuwait and Kerala, and one each from Saudi Arabia, Andaman Islands, Punjab, and Telangana. These 1,982 cases include 1,186 males and 796 female patients and four districts -Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur accounted for more cases.

Of these 1,982 cases, Chennai has more cases with 1,479 followed by Chengalpattu (128), Thiruvallur (92), and Kancheepuram (26). The state has reported 1,342 fresh discharges taking the total number of discharges to 22,047. The state has recorded more than a thousand discharges for the second consecutive day and the current discharge tally is higher than the active COVID-19 cases in the state.

The state has also recorded 18 deaths, as the steady rise in the number of deaths has taken the death toll to 367. According to the press release, of these 18, ten were reported at the government hospitals while the rest eight were recorded at the private hospitals. Of these 18, 15 belong to Chennai and of the remaining three, two belong to Chengalpattu and one was from Thiruvallur. 

The press release stated that 17 deceased had co-morbid conditions that had become a major factor behind the death claimed by the pandemic. Chennai is just numbers away to hit the tally of 29,000 as with the current reporting of 1,479 cases, the city has recorded 28,924 cases so far of which 13,906 are active, 14,723 have been discharged, and 294 had died due to infection.

As of Friday evening, the state has reported 40,698 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra, of which 18,281 are active - including isolation, 22,047 have been discharged, and 367 had succumbed to the virus.
