The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 5,980 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Saturday taking the state's total tally to 3,73,410 positive cases so far including active, recovered, and deceased patients.
According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 41,36,490 samples so far including 73,547 that were tested on Saturday of which 5,980 returned positive of the viral infection. These 5,980 cases include the influx of 23 people who returned to the state from other regions. Of these 5,980 cases, 3,665 are males and the rest 2,315 are female patients.
The press release stated that 19 districts of the state had majorly contributed with more cases in the current reporting. Chennai has reported 1,294 fresh cases, 406 cases belong to Chengalpattu, 389 cases from Coimbatore, 384 cases belong to Thiruvallur, 309 cases belong to Cuddalore, 288 cases belong to Salem, 257 cases from Kancheepuram, and 244 cases belong to Vellore.
Pudukottai has reported 154 cases, 144 cases from Theni, 140 cases belong to Tirunelveli, 137 cases belong to Tenkasi, 133 cases from Villupuram, 129 cases belong to Dindigul, 120 cases each from Trichy and Thoothukudi, 117 cases from Erode, 109 and 108 cases from Thanjavur and Kanyakumari respectively. The state has reported 5,603 fresh discharges through which the state's discharge tally stands at 3,13,280.
Tamil Nadu has recorded 80 fresh deaths taking the death toll to 6,420 so far. According to the press release, of these 80 fresh deaths, 57 deaths were recorded at the government hospitals, and the rest are recorded at the private hospitals. Of these 80 deaths, 11 deaths belong to Chennai and 72 out of a total of 80 deaths were identified with the comorbidities.
According to the data of the health department, the state has reported less than 100 deaths for the first time in the last 20 days. For the past 20 days, including Saturday, the state has reported 2,288 deaths. Chennai has reported the sharpest rise with 1,294 fresh cases amid the restrictions and containment measures. With the current reporting, Chennai has recorded 1,24,071 cases so far of which 1,08,545 have been discharged and 2,564 had died of the global pandemic.
As of Saturday - August 22, Tamil Nadu has reported 3,73,410 cases so far of which 53,413 are active, 3,13,280 have been discharged, and 6,420 had succumbed to the viral infection.
