COVID-19: With the highest single-day spike of 1,162 cases, TN has crossed 23,000!

Tamil Nadu has reported 1,162 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Monday through which the state has crossed the tally of 23,000 by reporting 23,495 cases so far in its territory including active, recovered, and deceased patients. 

The state has opened June month in a way that it never wished as the current reporting is the highest single-day rise recorded by the state since the outbreak surpassing the previous tally of 1,149 cases that were reported on Sunday. The state closed May month with the second-highest numbers in India and for the past few days, the state has been witnessing the sharpest spikes in numbers, with at least a thousand cases two days each, amid the lockdown.

 

According to the official press release issued by the state health department, the state has tested 5,03,339 samples so far including 11,377 that were tested on Monday of which 1,162 returned positive. These 1,162 cases include 50 people who returned to the state from other regions (32 from Maharashtra, ten from Delhi, three from Karnataka, one each from Haryana, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal).

Of these 1,162, 685 are males, 473 are female patients while the rest 4 are transgenders and 967 cases belong to Chennai, 49 cases belong to Chengalpattu, 33 belong to Thiruvallur, 16 belong to Salem, ten belong to Thiruvannamalai, nine belong to Kancheepuram, eight belong to Villupuram. Five each from Ariyalur, Coimbatore, Dindigul, and Ranipet.

Four each from Thanjavur, Vellore, and Namakkal and three belong to Tirunelveli, two each from Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, and Tenkasi, and one each from Cuddalore, Nilgiris, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Thirupathur, Thoothukudi, and Virudhunagar. Apart from the district-wise abstract, one person has been kept under the airport quarantine and 21 have been going through railway quarantine.

The state has reported 413 fresh discharges through which the total number of discharges stands at 13,170 so far and the state has also recorded 11 more fatalities taking the death toll to 184. According to the press release, of these eleven fatalities, nine belong to Chennai while the rest two belong to Dindigul and Pudukottai respectively. Nine deceased had been identified to have co-morbid conditions like diabetes and hypertension. 

With the current reporting of 967 cases, Chennai has recorded 15,770 cases so far and the city's tally is about two-thirds of total cases reported in the state. As of Monday evening, the state has reported 23,495 positive cases so far -second highest in India after Maharashtra of which 10,138 are active - including isolation, 13,170 have been discharged, and 184 had succumbed to the virus. The state has been going through the fifth phase of the lockdown which will be in place till June 30.
