COVID-19: Meet India's oldest couple who recovered from the pandemic!

The state of Kerala, which was the first Indian state to report the positive cases for the Coronavirus, has, on Friday, witnessed the welcoming development on its fight to vanquish the global pandemic from the state after the oldest couple who were infected by the virus had got cured and discharged from the hospital.

The cure has become the sign of hope for the state's task force to curb the spread of the virus amid the lockdown. A 93-year-old man, who has been recorded as India's oldest person affected by the virus, and his wife got discharged from the Medical College in Kottayam after they have been fully recovered from the virus.

According to the reports, Thomas Abraham, a 93-year-old and his 88-year-old wife Mariyamma had turned positive for the virus after coming in direct contact with the virus from their son, daughter-in-law, and grandson who returned from Italy last month. The couple is the native of Ranni village in Pathanamthitta district and they were admitted to the Kottayam hospital on March 9th after which they have gone through the battle against the virus.

The Kerala Health Department said that both were very critical at one stage and they were given proper care by the doctors and nurses. During the hospitalization period, the nurse who came in contact with them tested positive for the virus and she also has been recovered and discharged on Friday. The oldest couple was considered as a high-risk category as they have been reported with pre-existing and age-related ailments including diabetes, hypertension, heart, and urinary infection. The elderly man had developed chest pain during the treatment.

Thomas Abraham was very critical and treated at the support of the ventilator and initially, the couple kept in separate rooms and later, they were put on in the same place where they can see each other. The doctors and medical team had provided proper treatments that had let them get cured of the virus. The reports say that the nurses even sang a lullaby and used to tell stories for them to sleep. The health department stated that the hospital has decided to discharge them after their latest sample test returned negative for the virus.

Kerala Health Minister Shailaja complimented the doctors, nurses, and other staff of the Medical College Hospital for curing India's oldest couple affected by the virus. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the recovery of the Kerala couple is a remarkable achievement for Kerala health workers. Thomas Abraham is a small-time tapioca and rubber grower and the couple has been surviving with three children, seven grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Earlier, their son, daughter-in-law, and grandson were discharged from Pathanamthitta hospital after they recovered from the virus infection. As of Saturday, Kerala has reported with 295 cases, of which 42 have recovered and two had passed away.
