The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 5,795 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday taking the state's total tally to 3,55,449 so far in its territory including active, recovered, and deceased patients.
According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 39,13,523 samples through RT-PCR so far including 67,720 that were tested on Wednesday of which 5,795 had returned positive for the viral infection. These 5,795 cases include the influx of ten people who returned to the state from other regions. Of these 5,795 cases, 3,541 are males and the rest 2,254 are female patients.

The press release stated that 18 districts of the state had reported major caseloads in the current reporting. Chennai has reported 1,186 cases, 394 cases from Coimbatore, 393 cases belong to Thiruvallur, 315 cases belong to Chengalpattu, 295 cases belong to Salem, 288 cases from Theni, 257 cases from Kancheepuram, and 238 cases belong to Cuddalore.
Virudhunagar has reported 184 cases, 175 cases belong to Vellore, 151 cases belong to Tirunelveli, 146 cases belong to Ranipet, 122 cases belong to Kanyakumari, 120 cases from Thiruvarur, 114 cases from Thanjavur, 111 cases belong to Dindigul, 109 cases belong to Madurai, and 105 cases from Pudukottai. The state has reported 6,384 fresh discharges taking the total tally of discharges to 2,96,171 so far.
The state has also recorded 116 fresh deaths through which the death toll currently stands at 6,123 and the current reporting of deaths has been recorded as one of the biggest spikes in the death toll.
According to the press release, of these 116 deaths, 84 deaths were recorded at the government hospitals, and the rest 32 were recorded at the private establishments. Of these 116 deaths, 16 each belong to Chennai and Coimbatore and 107 deaths out of 116 had identified with the comorbidities, one of the important factors behind the deaths claimed by the global pandemic.
According to the state health department, through the current reporting of 116 deaths, Tamil Nadu has reported over a hundred single-day deaths for the seventeenth consecutive day, and for the seventeen days, including Wednesday, the state has reported 1,991 deaths with the major contribution from Chennai and active contribution from the rest of the districts.
With the current reporting of 1,186 cases, Chennai has recorded 1,20,267 cases so far of which 1,05,494 have been discharged and 2,517 had died of the viral infection. As of Wednesday - August 19, Tamil Nadu has reported 3,55,449 cases so far of which 53,155 are active, 2,96,171 have been discharged, and 6,123 had succumbed to the viral infection.
