The state of Tamil Nadu has reported 5,871 fresh cases that were tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Wednesday which had taken the state's tally to 3,14,520 cases so far including active, recovered, and deceased patients.
According to the official press release issued by the state health department, Tamil Nadu has tested 34,32,025 samples so far including 71,575 that were tested on Wednesday of which 5,871 had returned positive. These 5,871 cases include the influx of 27 people who returned to the state from various regions including the rest of the Indian states and aboard. Of these 5,871 cases, 3,521 are males and the rest 2,350 are female patients.

The press release stated that 17 districts in the state had accounted for major caseloads with more than a hundred cases each in the current reporting. Chennai has reported 993 cases, Chengalpattu has reported 439 cases, 407 cases belong to Thiruvallur, 371 cases from Kancheepuram, 339 cases from Cuddalore, 294 cases belong to Coimbatore, 292 cases belong to Virudhunagar, 282 cases from Theni, 254 cases belong to Ranipet, and 217 cases from Salem.
Madurai has reported 169 cases, Thoothukudi has reported 157 cases, 147 cases belong to Pudukottai, 137 cases from Tirunelveli, 135 cases from Trichy, 123 and 117 cases from Thiruvannamalai and Kanyakumari respectively. The state has reported 5,633 fresh discharges taking the total tally of discharges to 2,56,313 so far.
As a fresh challenge and burden for the government, the death toll in the state has been soaring for the past ten days. According to the press release, the state has reported 119 fresh deaths which had taken the death toll to 5,278 so far. Of these 119 deaths, 78 deaths were recorded at the government hospitals and the rest 41 were reported at the private establishments. Of these 119 deaths, 20 belong to Chennai and 107 of these 119 deaths had identified with the co-morbidities, which are one of the larger factors behind the deaths claimed by the global pandemic.
According to the health department, through the current reporting of 119 deaths, Tamil Nadu has reported over a hundred single-day deaths for the tenth consecutive day, which exemplified the aberrant state in curbing the spread and preventing the vulnerable population from the viral infection. For the past ten days, including Wednesday, the state has reported 1,146 deaths amid the containment measures.
Amid the soaring death toll, Chennai has reported below a thousand cases for the sixth consecutive day. With the current reporting of 993 cases, Chennai has recorded 1,12,059 cases so far of which 98,736 have been discharged and 2,370 had died of the viral infection. In the total death toll, nine districts in the state had crossed the toll of hundred deaths - Chennai with 2,370 deaths, 332 from Chengalpattu, 309 from Thiruvallur, 303 from Madurai, 159 from Kancheepuram, 149 from Coimbatore, 142 from Virudhunagar, 101 deaths each from Thiruvannamalai and Vellore.
As of Wednesday - August 12, Tamil Nadu has reported 3,14,520 cases so far of which 52,929 are active, 2,56,313 have been recovered, and 5,278 had succumbed to the virus.
