Custodial death of Vignesh in Chennai: A murder case is booked against three police officers!

Nearly three weeks after the death of Vignesh in Chennai, who died under police custody, a murder case has now been filed against the three police officers in connection with his death. The development has come when the shocking custodial death is been probed by the CBCID.

Even as the DMK government celebrates its one year, the incidents of custodial deaths are drawing outrage against the government and the Chief Minister, who is responsible for the state's police force. Chief Minister MK Stalin has on Friday - May 6 announced in the state assembly that three policemen attached to the G5 Secretariat Colony police station have been booked for murder and will be probed in connection with the death of Vignesh (25).

He further said that the FIR has been altered and the murder section has been invoked against the three cops - Sub Inspector Pugalam Perumal, Head Constable Pavanraj, and Home Guard Deepak. In the midst of facing pressure for custodial deaths, the government has been asserting a fair probe into such incidents as it must be noted that in a week, another Tamil Nadu man Thangamani (47) has died under the judicial custody.

In the case of Vignesh, a Dalit man who gave horse rides on Chennai's iconic Marina Beach, he had died on April 19 after he was taken under police custody along with his friend Suresh on the charges of possessing drugs and liquor. He was taken by the police in the wee hours of April 19 from Kellys Junction, Chennai and on that night, he had died. The police had claimed that Vignesh had injuries such as swelling and a fracture in his leg. He also got seizures and all of these ailments were reasons for his death.

However, the autopsy report, which was recently released, had revealed that Vignesh had 13 injuries and that include injuries on his face. The revelation had become fresh trouble for the police and the state government as the photo of Vignesh that was taken soon after the arrest had shown no injuries on his face. Furthermore, the CCTV footage from the Kellys Junction had clearly shown that the policemen tried to arrest him as he was running, which was evidence that he had no fracture in his leg.

Following the autopsy report and the CCTV footage, the outrage had grown against the state government. As Vignesh's family and the activists had vowed that Vignesh was tortured by the police officers and he had died under police custody, the government was surfaced with staunch demands over taking action against the police officers. As the probe has been transferred to the CBCID, the Chief Minister has now announced that the murder case has been filed against the three police officers.
