'The Family Man 2' meets controversy in TN: Why MK Stalin's Govt wants to ban the web series?

The yet-to-release web series 'The Family Man 2' has been running through strong fury and controversies in Tamil Nadu as the ruling government and several parties in the state are flaying the series for its portrayal of Eelam Tamils in a demeaning fashion. The trailer of the series was recently released and it had sparked major flak from the leaders and activists.

While the OTT giant Amazon Prime is all set to release the web series, the Tamil Nadu government has demanded a ban on the release of the series. On Monday, the state government has asked the Center to take immediate action to ban the release of 'The Family Man 2'.

The government said that the web series had depicted the Eelam Tamils in a highly objectionable fashion. Tamil Nadu Information Technology Minister T Mano Thangaraj cited that the web series carry inappropriate, condemnable, and malicious contents. He also said that the web series aims to degrade the historical struggle of the Eelam Tamils in neighbouring Sri Lanka.

In his letter to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar demanding the ban, Mano Thangaraj said that the web serial has not only hurt the sentiments of Eelam Tamils but also the feelings of most of the Tamil Nadu people and he pressed that it would be prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony in the state if the web series got a green signal for the release.

Mano Thangaraj has underlined that the web series intentionally downplay the democratic battles and sacrifices made by the Eelam Tamils. He scathingly wrote, "A serial loaded with insults and insinuations against the glorious Tamil culture could never be considered as the one having any broadcasting value. Branding Tamil speaking actress Samantha as a terrorist in the serial is directly an attack on the pride of Tamils living abroad in the world and no one will tolerate this kind of motivated campaign."

He further said that while the Eelam Tamils are struggling for decades for equality, peace, and justice in Sri Lanka, it is unjustifiable for an organization like Amazon Prime to undertake this project and unfold a vicious campaign against the Tamil people who majorly contribute to the development of India and several nations across the earth. Thangaraj's comments were echoed by several political leaders in the state.

It must be noted that earlier, MDMK Chief Vaiko had urged the Center to ban the web series and Naam Tamilar Katchi's Chief Seeman had said that The Family Man 2 is portraying the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam as terrorists and he demanded that the web series must be banned. According to reports, the trailer of The Family Man 2 was released on May 19 and it has Manoj Bajpai, Samantha Akkineni, Priyamani, Shreya Dhanwanthary, and Mehal Thakur in the important roles. The web series is slated to release on Amazon Prime on June 4th, 2021.
