First day of Thunivu and Varisu! Check out how these two biggies fared at the box office.

The state has awoken with the grand celebrations for the Kollywood's biggest releases Thunivu and Varisu, which starred Ajith and Vijay respectively on Wednesday.  Over 450 theatres in the region played Vamshi Paidpally's Varisu, while H. Vinoth's Thunivu was shown in 520 theatres across the state. 

According to film trade reporters, 'Varisu' has reportedly earned Rs 19.43 crores in the state market, where Thunivu grossed 24.59 crores. Entertainment industry trackers reporting, "#Thurivu debuts at No.1 at the TN Box-office on Day 1 … Once again proving Actor #AjithKumar is the King of Opening." With the festival of Pongal commencing at the end of this week, both films are expected to maintain an iron grip over the box-office.

On their third day, both films are expected to make more than 100 crore, and when the Pongal holiday ends on Jan. 18, the films could end up earning profit. However ti's tough to tell which film will have a higher opening day gross because both are currently in a tight race. But earlier it is guesstimated that each film will bring in around Rs 20 crore by the day ends. If Varisu and Thunivu had been released on different days, industry professionals predict that their combined earnings would have been four times as high.

H Vinoth's 'Thunivu,' which stars Ajith in a villainous role, in a bank heist story setup.  Fans have wisely appreciated the film because of Ajith's charisma and the high quality of its action scenes. Music by Ghibran, and key performances by Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani, John Kokken, Veera, Darshan, and Cibi Chandran.

Moviegoers can catch Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles of Vamshi Paidipally's "Varisu," a Tamil-Telugu bilingual film. Music for the film was composed by S Thaman, and the supporting cast included Sarathkumar, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Shaam, Sangeetha Krish, Samyuktha, and Yogi Babu.
