For the first time after returning as MP, Rahul Gandhi to visit Wayanad...Here's when!

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is all set to visit his parliamentary constituency Wayanad for the first time after his Lok Sabha membership was reinstated, following the staying of his conviction by the Supreme Court. Rahul Gandhi returned to the Parliament on Monday - August 7 amidst a rousing welcome from the members of the opposition parties.

Rahul Gandhi was elected to the current Lok Sabha from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala and his membership was revoked earlier this March after a Gujarat court convicted him with a two-year prison sentence in a criminal defamation case. The case was lodged against him in connection to his 2019 speech where he asked 'Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, and Narendra Modi, how come all the thieves have Modi as their surname?'

While the Gujarat court had convicted him with two-year prison sentence, the Lok Sabha Secretariat revoked Rahul Gandhi's membership under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Following the conviction, the Congress leader had waged a legal battle and when a sessions court and the Gujarat High Court didn't award him a relief, he finally moved his appeal to the Supreme Court, challenging his conviction.

After hearing his appeal, a three-judge bench of the apex court had on August 4 stayed Rahul Gandhi's conviction and paved way for his comeback as an MP. On Monday, in the wake of the apex court order, the Lok Sabha Secretariat officially announced that Rahul Gandhi's membership has been restored. Moments after the notification, Rahul Gandhi returned to the Parliament with more expectations and attention.

As it is expected that Rahul Gandhi's presence in the Lok Sabha would boost the opposition parties to take on the Modi regime, he had attended the parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday - August 8 where the Congress party's no-confidence motion against the Modi regime over the Manipur violence was taken for a debate. It has been reported that Rahul Gandhi will address the lower house on Wednesday, a day ahead of Prime Minister Modi's response to the no-confidence motion.

Back in his constituency Wayanad, the Congress cadres were expecting Rahul Gandhi's visit after returning to the Parliament. On Tuesday, it was officially announced that Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Wayanad on August 12 and 13, which will be first trip to his constituency after being reinstated as an MP. Taking to social media, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal wrote, "On 12-13 August, Sh. Rahul Gandhi ji will be in his constituency Wayanad. The people of Wayanad are elated that democracy has won, their voice has returned to Parliament! Rahul ji is not just an MP but a member of their family!"
