In five points: A look into the oath-taking ceremony of Gujarat CM-elect Bhupendra Patel!

The BJP is all set to sail on its pro-incumbency wave in Gujarat for five more years with a historical victory in the recently-held assembly polls. The state's BJP face Bhupendra Patel, who is into the Chief Ministerial ship, will continue his tenure in the new government after the elected BJP legislators picked him to lead the party in the assembly.

Patel also had a clear backing from the BJP's central leadership to run the government which will face the general elections in 2024. Patel had garnered a massive voters' verdict with a humongous margin and he will take oath as the next Chief Minister of Gujarat on Monday - December 12 in a grand ceremony, which will be held at Helipad Ground near the new Secretariat in Gandhi Nagar at 2 pm. Let's take a look at the impending ceremony in five points,

  • The oath-taking ceremony will have the presence of national BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Roadways Minister Nitin Gadkari, BJP National President JP Nadda and other central ministers.
  • Besides the national leaders, the ceremony will have the attendance of BJP Chief Ministers- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Haryana's Manohar Lal Khattar, Madhya Pradesh's Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Assam's Himanta Biswa Sarma, Karnataka's Basavaraj Bommai, Uttarakhand's Pushkar Singh Dhami, Maharashtra's Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis.
  • Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat will be administering the oath to Bhupendra Patel as the Chief Minister. Along with Patel, around 25 cabinet ministers will also take oath to their respective offices. Three big stages have been installed at the venue and while the center stage is allocated for Patel and his cabinet, the other two stages have been allocated for the VVIPs and special invitees.
  • Special invitees include 200 sadhus from the state and the audience will include members from all communities and Patidars, other backward classes, scheduled castes and tribes and women will be given priority. Several reports say that such seating preferences have been given by keeping the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in mind.
  • The opening ceremony will draw national attention as the BJP is forming the government for the seventh consecutive time. BJP has been ruling Gujarat nearly for three decades. Bhupendra Patel has become the Chief Minister in September 2021 after replacing Vijay Rupani and if he rules the upcoming term to the fullest, Patel will complete six years as the Chief Minister and he will become the second Chief Minister of Gujarat to serve the office for long period after Narendra Modi, who served as the Chief Minister for 12 years.

Though BJP ruled the state for decades, it is eluding the anti-incumbency wave and in this election, the party had broken its own record and scripted a new history. In 182 assembly seats, BJP has won 156 seats and secured 53% of votes. It is the first time that any party is crossing the 150-mark in the history of Gujarat and on the other hand, BJP has surpassed its own record. Before this election, the party's best figure was winning 127 seats in the 2002 polls.

After two decades, it has bagged the highest number of seats and it has also breached the predictions made by the exit polls. While Congress was the opposition party by winning 77 seats in the 2017 Lok Sabha polls, the grand old party has lost the status of opposition by just getting 17 seats in this election. Notably, the new entrant Aam Aadmi Party has won five seats and secured 13% of votes. Bhupendra Patel, who is the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat, has contested in the Patidar-stronghold Ghatlodia constituency and triumphed the race by securing 2,13,530 votes, around 1,92,000 votes more than his immediate contender Amee Yajnik of the Congress party.
