Former ADMK leader and renowned poet Pulamaipithan passes away at 85: Leaders pay tribute!

Former ADMK's Presidium Chairman and renowned poet Pulamaipithan has passed away on Wednesday in Chennai at the age of 85 due to his age-related ailments. Being a prominent face in Tamil Nadu, Pulamaipithan had observed close ties with legendary actor MG Ramachandran and as a poet, he has written several ever-lasting songs in the movies that were acted by Ramachandran, who was the founder of ADMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. 

Pulamaipithan was hospitalized for the past few days due to the ailments. He was getting treated at Fortis Malar Hospital in Adyar, Chennai and he was placed under life support as he was battling for survival. However, amid the treatments, he had breathed his last on Wednesday - September 8 at the age of 85. Born on 6th October 1935 in Coimbatore, Pulamaipithan's birth name was Ramasamy and after developing an interest in poetry and writing, he had a pen name of Pulavar Pulamaipithan. 

At an early age, he was working in textile mills in Coimbatore and also studied Tamil literature in his hometown. He moved to Chennai in 1964 with an aim of writing songs for the Tamil movies and before etching his career in writing, he worked as a Tamil teacher at Santhome High School in Chennai and he had a breakthrough in the cinema industry through his song 'Naan Yaar Nee Yaar', which was featured in the Tamil film 'Kudiyirundha Koyil' starred by MGR and Jayalalithaa. The movie was released in 1968 and this song has poured a huge recognition for Pulamaipithan.

He went on to pen some of the super hit songs including "Odi Odi Uzhaikkanum" in the movie 'Nalla Neram', "Aayiram Nilave Vaa" in the movie 'Adimai Penn'. Pulamaipithan had also written songs in the movies 'Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikesi' and 'Thenali Raman', acted by Vadivelu. He also had written lyrics for the movies starred by Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan. Besides sparkling in the Tamil cinema industry through his songs, Pulamaipithan has also laid his footsteps in politics. He had served as Deputy Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council and was appointed as "Arasavai Kavignar" (Poet laureate) by the then Chief Minister MGR.

Pulamaipithan was married to Tamil Arasi and they have two children - Pugazhendhi and Kannagi. According to reports, he was admitted to Fortis Malar Hospital on August 28 and was put on life support. On Tuesday, expelled ADMK leader VK Sasikala had visited him at the hospital and inquired about his health condition. His health had been deteriorating and he passed away on Wednesday. His mortal remains will be taken to his home in Neelangarai and will be kept for the public to pay homage. After learning about his demise, several political leaders and celebrities have been paying tribute to the deceased soul and expressing condolences to the family members.
