Palaniswamy has been one of the strongest supporters of current Deputy Chief Minister O Pannerselvam and he had engaged with the latter's revolted camp that took birth after the demise of then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in 2016 and Palaniswamy has seen as one of the vital critics against the rise of Sasikala, the closest aide of Jayalalithaa, in the party. He has been staging legal battles against Sasikala and her elevation as the party's general secretary.  He had tabled his petition at the Election Commission of India and Delhi High court with the view of seeking the directive from the bodies against the elevation of Sasikala.

He has been portraying his stand across various media and in March 2018, the party's central leadership captained by Edappadi Palaniswami and Paneerselvam had removed him from the party after he allegedly demanded the party to support the no-confidence motion that was proposed against the ruling BJP government in Parliament if the Central government fails to take a stand on Cauvery water issue. His statement that he aired on a television interview had spurred the heat from the ADMK party, which observes close alliance with the BJP.

Despite being expelled from the party, Palaniswamy claimed that the leadership holds no right to remove him from the party and he has been using the party's name, symbol, and attending functions under the party's name following which he has been arrested by the police. Our sources close to the development reveal that he has been arrested amidst the ruling party had pressured him to withdraw the petitions he filed in the courts against the party. The sources stated that Edappadi Palaniswami was informed that the petitions filed by K.C. Palaniswamy could cause major discrepancies for him at the party.
