From free medical expenses to Rs 4,000 per family as COVID relief: The first five orders signed by TN CM Stalin!

Hours after swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin arrived at the Chief Secretariat and sat on the Chief Minister's chair for the first time. He was given a protocol welcome at the secretariat and the authorities escorted him to the Chief Minister's chamber to begin his duties. He was accompanied by senior leaders and bureaucrats as he entered his new office by marking a historical milestone in his political career.

He assumed the office amid large-scale anticipations over his first order as the Chief Minister. He entered the office with the Himalayan task of addressing the health and financial crises triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic and delivering the promises that he made to the voters during the election. With the greater responsibility, he had signed in five orders as the Chief Minister and these orders have become crucial as they had concentrated on relaxing the burden of low and middle-class people as they endure financial distress brought by the pandemic.

The following are the five orders that Stalin signed as the Chief Minister,

  • The price of Aavin Milk will be reduced by Rs 3 per litre and this order has come as a relief to the residents and it was one of the poll promises of the DMK. This order will come to effect on May 16.
  • All women, including working professionals and students, can travel in state-owned buses (ordinary fare) for free from Saturday- May 8. The order says that the free-of-cost bus travel will put the government to borne Rs 1,200 crore expenditure and it will be released from the state's treasury.
  • Rs 4,000 will be immediately provided to all the rice ration cardholders across the state with the view of rescuing the major populace in the state from the trap of financial burden due to the pandemic and restrictions. This order says that of the Rs 4,000, Rs 2,000 will be distributed in May and the remaining will be given later.
  • The medical expenses incurred for COVID-19 treatment at the private hospitals will be covered under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme and the expenses will be reimbursed to the hospital, which means that the beneficiaries of this scheme can avail free-of-cost treatment for the pandemic at the private hospitals.
  • Stalin has signed the order of establishing a new department to fulfil the promise of addressing the petitions in the first 100 days of the DMK government. Named as "Ungal Thoguthiyil Mudhalamaichar" (Chief Minister at your constituency), the scheme is one of the poll promises of DMK that all the petitions received under this system will be addressed in 100 days.

The first order of every Chief Minister would be keenly watched at all times and as Stalin assumed the office of Chief Minister amid challenging times, these five orders from him had drawn major significance than any of his predecessors as he is entering the unprecedented battle of addressing the health and economic crises in the state. He will be convening his first cabinet meeting at 4 pm on Friday to discuss and take stock of the Covid situation in the state and framing new strategies and measures to contain the second wave of the pandemic.

On Friday, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit has administered the oath of office and secrecy to MK Stalin as the Chief Minister and along with Stalin, 33 cabinet ministers had also taken the oath for their respective ministries at the ceremony hosted by Raj Bhavan.
