Fresh trouble for former ADMK Minister C Vijayabaskar...Will he prove his victory?

Former Tamil Nadu Health Minister and current ADMK MLA of C Vijayabaskar has invited fresh trouble from his victory in the recently-held election. He had contested from the Viralimalai constituency in the ADMK's ticket and after episodes of tug-of-war in the voting counting, Vijayabaskar was finally declared as the winner and entered the assembly for the second consecutive time.

A month after the victory, the DMK candidate who contested against the former minister has now moved to the Madras High Court challenging the victory of Vijayabaskar in Viralimalai. DMK candidate M Palaniappan, who lost the election by 23,598 votes. He has sought a directive from the high court to declare Vijayabaskar's victory as void.

According to reports, Palaniappan has said that he was moving the petition on the ground that ADMK candidate Vijayabaskar had indulged in corrupt practices of bribing the voters with gifts and payment of illegal gratification to win the votes. The petitioner has said that it had incurred excess expenditure of corrupt practice and the ADMK candidate had taken the assistance of government servants and tampering with control units in the strong rooms with the help of the returning officer.

As Vijayabaskar has won the election by bribing the voters, the DMK candidate has sought the directive of declaring the election of Vijayabaskar as void and for a consequential declaration that the petitioner is the duly elected candidate in the constituency. The reports say that the high court will schedule the case for hearing in the coming days.

Vijayabaskar is one of the ADMK ministers who won the recently-held assembly polls. The elections were held on April 6 and the votes were counted on May 2. The DMK alliance had secured a landslide victory by getting 159 seats while the ADMK alliance had faced a debacle with 75 seats and managed to become the opposition party. MK Stalin has become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7 and he has inducted ADMK's Vijayabaskar into a top-level committee advising the government in COVID-19 containment measures.
