Haryana Health Minister, who received COVID-19 vaccine dose, is under critical condition!

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij has been spelled in critical condition and he was moved to Medanta hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday. He has been battling the COVID-19 viral infection for the past ten days and taken to Gurugram for further treatment. In a shocking development, Vij had tested positive for the pandemic two weeks after he was administered the COVID-19 vaccine.

Anil Vij was India's first health minister to receive the dose of the indigenous COVID-19 vaccine. However, he was confirmed to have contracted the viral infection weeks after the vaccination, which brought the vaccine under public scrutiny with a series of questions on its efficacy. According to reports, Anil Vij was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday in critical condition. The health minister of the BJP ruling state has been getting treated under the senior director of the Internal Medicine Department at Medanta.

The reports say that he has been suffering from a lung infection. He was tested positive for COVID-19 on December 5 and initially, he was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Ambala, and then, he was getting treated at the Haryana government's Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak and he was receiving convalescent plasma therapy.

The institute had said that Anil Vij had moderate COVID-19 with bilateral viral pneumonia. As his health condition didn't improve in Rohtak, his family had asked the institute to shift to the private facility in Gurugram for further treatment.

Following their request, Vij was shifted to Medanta Hospital on Tuesday and he has been battling COVID-19 under life support. The 67-year-old minister is extremely critical as his health had got deteriorated. He had last month administered with the two-dose trial of indigenous COVID-19 vaccine candidate Covaxin. The minister had said that he would be volunteering in the phase 3 trials of the vaccine candidate after which he had received the doses of vaccine.

Covaxin is one of the indigenous vaccines in India that has been its trials. The vaccines are administered to the volunteers to test their efficacy to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The Covaxin is developed by Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech and Anil Vij is one of the volunteers and he was administered the dose on November 20 at the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment.

However, two weeks later, he was tested positive for COVID-19 on December 5 and he has been hospitalized since then. As he has now been in a critical condition due to COVID-19 even after the vaccination, the development has sparked questions on the vaccine's efficacy among the public. Amid such questions, the Union Health Ministry has said that Covaxin is a two-dose vaccine and that  Anil Vij was given only the first dose, which was administered to him two weeks before he tested positive for COVID-19.
