The first look poster of 800, a biopic on the legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, was unveiled on Monday, coinciding with his birthday. The film, which is written and directed by MS Sripathy, stars Madhurr Mittal of Slumdog Millionaire fame as the spin wizard and Mahima Nambiyar as his wife Madhimalar.

Mittal, who stepped into the role of Muralitharan, shared the first look poster of his biopic, 800 and as well the makers by taking us to Twitter, and wrote, "We are proud to bring you his story beyond the twists & turns across 22 yards. #HappyBirthdayMuralidaran. Presenting 800, the official bio-pic of #MuthiahMuralidaran starring #MadhurrMittal ". The film traces the journey of Muralitharan, who holds the record for taking 800 wickets in test cricket, the highest by any bowler in history.

He also has 534 wickets in ODIs and 13 wickets in T20Is, making him one of the greatest spinners of all time. The film will showcase his achievements as well as his challenges and controversies, both on and off the field. The film has been shot across Sri Lanka, Chennai, Cochin, England and Australia, and will be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi languages. The film is produced by Movie Train Motion Pictures and has music by Ghibran and cinematography by RD Rajasekar.

800 was initially announced with Vijay Sethupathi playing Muralitharan, but the actor opted out of the project following backlash from some Tamil groups and politicians who accused him of endorsing a pro-Sinhala stance. Muralitharan himself had requested Sethupathi to withdraw from the film to avoid any trouble for him.

Muthaiah Muralidaran is a former Sri Lankan cricketer, coach, businessman and a member of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. He retired from international cricket in 2011 after taking his 800th test wicket in his final match against India, which is the reason behind the anticipating biopic's title. He is the only bowler to take 800 wickets in test cricket and more than 530 wickets in one-day internationals. He also holds 16 world records, most of which are unlikely to be broken in the near future.
