India's COVID-19 tally has been peaking for the last few weeks while the country has been preparing to unlock from the fullest shape of the lockdown after five months, as the recent spike has made the country to surpass Brazil and become the second worst-hit country by the global pandemic after the United States.
The nation's never-wished feat has come when it has wakened up for the second week of the phase of the larger relaxations across its territory with the metro rail services and public transports have widely been resumed from Monday - September 7.
According to the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 90,802 fresh cases in the last 24 hours till Monday morning and the current surge has become the world's highest single-day rise of the COVID-19 cases since the outbreak which exemplified the grounds of rampant spread in the country, causing a major worry to the government and the frontline workers in the battle to contain the spread.
With the current reporting of 90,802 cases, India has recorded over 90,000 cases for the second consecutive day. The country's tally has now crossed 42 lakh by reporting 42,04,614 cases so far and it has taken the country to the second spot globally by surpassing Brazil's COVID-19 tally, which has reported 4.14 million cases so far.
India is now the most affected country by the COVID-19 wave in Asia and the second-worst affected country in the world after the United States, which has reported over 6.4 million cases so far. The reports say that India would likely surpass the tally of the United States by the end of September if the current trend and spike continue amid the large scale relaxations from the lockdown and restrictions.

According to Reuters, India is nearly 70,000 cases ahead of Brazil. Though the Latin American country releases its new tally later on Monday, it's less likely that it would surpass India's single-day tally. Indian authorities are attributing the soaring caseload in the country to a large number of testings in its territory. The worst affected country in Asia has tested 4,95,51,507 samples so far including 7,20,362 samples that were tested in the last 24 hours.
Though the health ministry asserted that the deaths in the country have been relatively low so far while compared to the cases, India has been reporting over a thousand deaths in a single day for the past five days. The Central government has poured major relaxations to restore normalcy from September 1 to gradually pull out the country from the lockdown amid the strongest wave of the pandemic.
Medical experts say that the country has been witnessing a second wave of the pandemic in some parts of the country and the cases have been soaring because of the increased testing and relaxing the restrictions on the public movement. At the global stage, the pandemic has affected over 27 million people so far of which more than 18 million have recovered and 8.80 lakh had died of the viral infection.
