In a significant move to forge a united Opposition front ahead of the 2024 general election, senior leaders of the Congress, Janata Dal, and Rashtriya Janata Dal met in Delhi today to explore the possibility of putting up a united fight against the ruling BJP. The meeting was attended by Congress president Rahul Gandhi, senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Bihar chief minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar, his deputy and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Kharge said it was a “historic meeting” and that they aim to unite all opposition parties for the upcoming polls. “We have decided to work together to protect the Constitution and save the country from the BJP’s misrule. We will also reach out to other like-minded parties and form a common minimum programme for the 2024 elections,” Kharge said.

Rahul Gandhi said a “historic step” had been taken to unite Opposition parties. “It is a process, it will develop the Opposition’s vision for the country,” he said. He also tweeted from his official handle, “We will protect the Constitution and save the country.”

"You ask 'how many opposition parties are needed (to defeat the BJP)'? This is a process as many as want to join us, we will all proceed together. We are in an ideological battle for the country. There is an attack on institutions  on the nation itself and this we (the opposition) will unite and fight," Rahul Gandhi added.

Kharge and Nitish Kumar held a press conference together earlier, during which the Congress leader made the following statement, “Rahulji and Bihar chief minister Nitishji and Tejashwiji and party leaders and friends, we had a historic meeting and discussed many issues, and have decided that all (opposition) parties must unite and fight forthcoming elections together. This is our decision today.” "We will try to unite as many parties as we can and move forward together," Nitish Kumar said after the meeting at Mallikarjun Kharge's Delhi residence.
