Hundreds of Indians evacuated from Afghanistan: What's India's new category of visa for Afghans?

As the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has been rechristened as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan after the Taliban group has completely taken over the reign in the country as the sequel of the withdrawal of the US and NATO troops from the Afghan soil. On Sunday, the Taliban fighters had successfully captured Kabul and regained control of the entire country and President Ghani has fled the country even before getting ousted by insurgents. As the Taliban has recouped the power for twenty years, the entire world has been watching the situation getting unfolded from Afghanistan that has left the Afghans brace their future as their past.

The advancement of the Taliban in capturing the territory and collapsing the shaky regime had put the global countries in grave concern and in an ordeal to safely evacuate the citizens and embassy start. Hours after the Taliban fighters entered Kabul and occupied the presidential palace, hundreds of thousands of people including foreigners and Afghan citizens had thronged to the Kabul airport to flee the country rather than bracing up the Taliban regime. The visuals from the airport were heartbreaking as the people tried to board the available flights to leave the country and hundreds of Afghans were seen attempting to enter the US Air Force aircraft when it was about to take off. The mass crowd had caused a stampede and disruption in the airport following which the flight operations were suspended.

As its implication, several people including hundreds of Indians, who wished to leave the country, had stranded in and around the airport. The Indian government had deployed measures to evacuate the Indian citizens and embassy staff from Afghanistan. Responding to the prevailing situation in Afghanistan, the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi has on Monday said, "The security situation in Kabul has deteriorated significantly in the last few days. It is changing rapidly even as we speak." By citing that the government has been monitoring all developments in Afghanistan closely, Bagchi said, "We have been issuing periodic advisories for the safety and security of the Indian nationals in that country, including calling for their immediate return to India."

On Sunday, after Kabul has fallen to the extremists, the C-17 Globemaster aircraft had evacuated around 180 Indians and on Tuesday, the government has safely evacuated over 150 citizens, including diplomats from Afghanistan. According to reports, the Indian Air Force's C-17 Globemaster had taken off from the Kabul Airport at 7 am on Tuesday with over 150 passengers and landed at the Jamnagar airbase in Gujarat. The evacuees include the Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Ronendra Tandon, the embassy's staff, their family members, and the journalists, who went to cover the war.

Arindam Bagchi has on Monday further said that they had circulated emergency contact numbers and had also been extending assistance to the community members. He stated, "We are aware that there are still some Indian nationals in Afghanistan who wish to return and we are in touch with them." He assured that the situation in Afghanistan is being monitored on a constant basis at high levels and the government will take all steps to ensure the safety and security of the Indian nationals and India's interest in Afghanistan.

India's new category of visa for Afghans:

On Tuesday, the Union Home Ministry has announced a new category of visa to fast-track the applications of Afghans who want to come to India in light of the dismaying situation in Afghanistan. The spokesperson of the Home Ministry said that the Ministry of Home Affairs reviews visa provisions in view of the current situation in Afghanistan. He stated that a new category of electronic visa has been introduced in the name of 'e-Emergency X-Misc Visa' to expedite visa applications for entry into India.

Responding to a question about the Afghan Sikh and Hindu communities, External Affairs Spokesperson  Arindam Bagchi has said that the ministry is in constant touch with the representatives of the Afghan Sikh and Hindu communities and assured that the ministry will work to repatriate those who wish to leave Afghanistan to India. The reports say that there are over 500 Indians still in Afghanistan and the Indian government will be sending aircraft to evacuate them. After the Indian Air Force aircraft landed in Gujarat on Tuesday, the people were given food and the state government had made arrangements to send the passengers to their destinations.

Gujarat Minister for Food and Civil Supply Dharmendrasinh Jadeja and Jamnagar Mayor had reached the airbase before the plane had landed. In a press release, the Gujarat government has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally looking after the evacuation of Indian nationals and officials stranded in Afghanistan after the Taliban had taken over the country. On Sunday, the US Department of State has released a joint statement in which more than five dozen countries had urged all parties to safeguard the departure of foreign nationals and Afghans who wish to leave the country.

The statement said, "Afghans and international citizens who wish to depart must be allowed to do so; roads, airports, and border crossing must remain open, and calm must be maintained." "Those in positions of power and authority across Afghanistan bear responsibility and accountability for the protection of human life and property, and for the immediate restoration of security and civil order", the statement added. The US officials had on Tuesday said that at least seven people had died in the chaos in Kabul airport.
