India to get a new Parliament building: See who has won the bid for construction!

India will soon be revamping the Parliament building from the current British Raj-era model to the modern infrastructure as the project for replacing one of the country's iconic monuments is expected to begin soon as the Taja group had won the bid in constructing the new and larger temple of democracy.

The development has come at a high time when the Modi government has initiated the proceedings to construct the new building. According to reports, Tata Projects had on Wednesday won the bid and would be constructing the new Parliament building at the cost of Rs 861.9 crore, and the new Parliament building will come under the Central Vista redevelopment project.

The new building will be constructed in close proximity to the existing Parliament building and the construction of presenting the new Parliament building to the nation would take around 21 months from the start of the construction work. However, the decision on when to commence the construction is yet to be taken. L&T and Tata Projects were on the race to win the bid.

L&T, which is one of the construction giants, had submitted a bid of Rs 865 crore whereas the Tata Projects was the lowest bidder and it was finally awarded the project of constructing the Parliament building and Tata's bid would also include maintenance works. Speaking to the IANS about winning the bid, the spokesperson of the Tata Projects said that the company is honored to be associated with this project and to accelerate India's development.

Unlike the current colonial-era building, the new Parliament building would be a ground plus two-storey triangular-shaped building. The project would be constructing a common central secretariat and would be revamping the three-kilometer long Rajpath, from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) said the new building will come up at plot number 118 of the Parliament House Estate.

The CPWD further stated that the existing Parliament building will continue to function during the entire period of the construction of the new building and after the inauguration of the new building, the current one will be used for other purposes.

According to reports, the new building would be having the capacity to accommodate more MPs as the strength of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha may get increased after the birth of many constituencies. The CPWD added that the total plinth area of the proposed building is approximately 65,000 square meters, including the basement area of approximately 16,921 square meters.

The new building will be having a spacious seating arrangement for around 1,400 MPs. In August 2019, both the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman had called the Central government to revamp and enhance the infrastructure of the Parliament with the new building and former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumita Mahajan had pressed the Modi government, while she was in office, to modernize the colonial-era building with the new infrastructure after she cited that the current building had shown the signs of distress and overutilization.
