'It is the only way to stop the COVID spread': Rahul Gandhi advises the Modi govt!

As India has been tightly grappled with the horrendous second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic by recording unprecedented milestones of the rise in the cases and facing the grim challenge in battling the spread, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has on Tuesday said that the nationwide lockdown is the only way to contain the spread. The comments from the Congress leader have come parallel to the similar advice from the medical experts.

Taking to Twitter, Rahul Gandhi said that the only way to stop the spread of Corona now is a full lockdown and stated that the inaction from the Indian government has been killing many innocent people. In another tweet, he wrote, "I just want to make it clear that a lockdown is now the only option because of a complete lack of strategy by GOI. They allowed, rather, they actively helped the virus reach this stage where there’s no other way to stop it. A crime has been committed against India."

Rahul Gandhi's advocacy for the complete lockdown has come weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the states to have the lockdown as the last resort. Gandhi's comments have also come just hours after US Health Official Dr Anthony Fauci suggested that the Indian government should consider implementing the nationwide lockdown and enhance the mass vaccination drive to tackle and contain the second wave of the pandemic.

Dr Fauci is the Chief Medical Adviser to US President Joe Biden and he said, "The solution immediately right now is, and I know India is already doing it, so I'm not telling you something that you are not already doing. A few days ago, I recommended and I believe at least parts of India are doing it, that you shut down the country in lockdown."

In his tweet, Rahul Gandhi had urged the Center to push for the implementation of the Congress party's proposed Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY) providing a minimum income guarantee to vulnerable sections to help them tide over the pandemic. The Congress party has also been asserting that the Central and state governments move to control the situation by resorting to partial curfews, travel restrictions, closure, and lockdowns.

The grand old party has also demanded the government to provide monthly income support to the people who will be affected and facing a distressed economy in the wake of the lockdowns and restrictions. India has reported 3,57,229 fresh COVID-19 cases, 3,20,289 discharges, and 3,449 deaths in the last 24 hours. According to the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 2,02,82,833 cases in total so far as of Tuesday of which 34,47,133 are active, 1,66,13,292 have been discharged, and 2,22,408 had succumbed to the viral infection.
