It's official: Eknath Shinde is Maharashtra CM while Devendra Fadnavis nods for BJP's demand!

Within 24 hours of Uddhav Thackeray's resignation after becoming the minority government, Maharashtra has got a new Chief Minister as Thackeray's former man Friday Eknath Shinde has become the Chief Minister with the support of the BJP and dissenting MLAs of Shiv Sena. Shinde has taken the oath as the Chief Minister on Thursday - June 30 at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai in the midst of the national spotlight.

The oath was administered by Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and after becoming the Chief Minister for the first time, Shinde has been flooded with wishes from across the country. Moments after Shinde took over the baton, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him. Taking to Twitter, Modi wrote, "I would like to congratulate Shri Eknath Shinde Ji on taking oath as Maharashtra CM."

"A grassroots level leader, he brings with him rich political, legislative, and administrative experience. I am confident that he will work towards taking Maharashtra to greater heights", Modi added. In a big surprise, BJP's Devendra Fadnavis took an oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Fadnavis was predicted to become the Chief Minister as he had served as the Chief Minister previously and it was also said that Shinde will be awarded the Deputy Chief Minister post.

However, in a last-minute twist in the tale, Shinde has become the Chief Minister while Fadnavis has taken charge as the Deputy Chief Minister after nodding to a demand from the BJP leadership. Initially, Fadnavis has backed Shinde for the Chief Minister and affirmed that he would stay away from the Shinde government. However, BJP had crafted a new plan to make Fadnavis the Deputy Chief Minister and even BJP's National President JP Nadda had made a personal request to Fadnavis.

Ahead of the oath-taking ceremony, Nadda said, "BJP's central leadership has decided that Devendra Fadnavis should become a part of the Govt. So, made a personal request to him and Central leadership has said that Devendra Fadnvais should take charge as Deputy CM of Maharashtra." Following the request, Fadnavis nodded to becoming the Deputy Chief Minister and took the oath for his new role alongside his Eknath Shinde.

After Fadnavis became the Deputy Chief Minister, Prime Minister Modi congratulated him and wrote, "Congratulations to Shri Devendra Fadnavis Ji on taking oath as Maharashtra Deputy CM. He is an inspiration for every BJP Karyakarta. His experience and expertise will be an asset to the Government. I am certain he will further strengthen Maharashtra's growth trajectory." Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, "I am sure that under the guidance of PM Narendra Modi, this new government will work with a dedicated spirit for the development of Maharashtra and the interests of the people."
