As we are in the mid-year of 2022, the last three months' releases have something for every kind of fan - a stack of banging blockbusters, intimate character dramas, and pulse-pounding thrillers. We have seen the setback for the Kollywood through 'Beast' and the industry had a strong and swift comeback through 'Vikram'.
When we look forward to the releases for the upcoming quarter, there is a dizzying amount of exciting, new 2022 movies coming to theatres, on streaming, or both. The following is a one-stop check post to take a look at 'Kollywood releases' and keep scrolling to know what's being packed in the Kollywood store for the next three months. And you must know that release dates are subject to change, check back in the prior dates, for shifts in the schedule.
Rocketry: The Nambi Effect
Rocketry is a sure-shot surprise treat for us because popular actor R. Madhavan has stepped in as a director and writer for the first time in his decade-lasting career. The Rocketry: Nambi Effect is a biographical drama film based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, a former scientist and aerospace engineer of the Indian Space Research Organisation, who was falsely accused of espionage. Simran plays the female leading role.
In addition to directing, Madhavan plays the role of Indian scientist, Nambi Narayanan. It was officially reported that Surya and Shah Rukh Khan both made a crucial cameo appearance in the movie. Madhavan in Rocketry promotion said he did a lot of homework for this project, as it was started right after his previous release 'Vikram Vedha', in 2018. The film trailer was already released in April 2021. Now the Rocketry will hit the theatres on July 01, 2022
For the first time in Kollywood history, prominent businessman Saravanan Arul entered the cinema industry with his debut movie 'The Legend' featuring himself as a scientist. Urvashi Rautela is playing the female lead opposite Saravanan in 'The Legend', which is written by Pattukotai Prabhakar and directed by JD-Jerry, and the film also has Nassar, Prabhu, Yogi Babu, Robo Shankar, Singam Puli, and Mayilsamy among others in some pivotal roles. Harris Jayaraj has scored the music, and the songs have received decent views so far. The film is said to be released on 01 July 2022.
Arulnithi, who never fails to thrill us with his earlier releases - 'Mounaguru', 'Demonte Colony', now, through his 'D Block' coming to theatres on 01 July 2022. The film is being released by Shakthi Film Factory and helmed by Vijaykumar Rajendran. Interestingly, Arulnidhi has two others movies to be released in the second half of the year. Arulnithi is also awaiting the release of another film titled 'Deja Vu' which is helmed by debutant Arvind S. 'Deja Vu' will be an investigative mystery thriller and it is expected to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. He also has 'Diary' getting ready for its release in August. It looks like 2022 will be an exciting year of sorts for Arulnithi.
Arun Vijay, who was last seen in 'Mafia: Chapter 1', and 'Oh MyDog', now packed up his upcoming release in July- 'Yaanai' by Hari on 01 July. The director who is famous for his fast-paced screenplay and tight-packed action drama, joints with Arun Vijay. The trailer didn't fail to assure that the film will be a 'mass entertainer' as the director's trademark work. The film which was originally scheduled to release on May 6 this year got postponed to June 17 and then to July 1.
Radhakrishnan Parthipan always pitches for trying new filming styles and his last released 'Ottha Seruppu' got familiar with the mono acting style. This time, he has come up with yet another phenomenal storyline through his 'Iravin Nizhal'. The movie has etched history for being the first Non-Linear style of Tamil Cinema. The film was shot in 96 minutes in a single shot and besides Parthipan, the movie has roped inVaralakshmi Sarathkumar and Robo Shankar in the lead roles.
The film is produced by 'Akira Productions and the music is composed by legendary AR Rahman. The trailer and lyrics of the film have been released recently and have been well received by the fans. The movie must have got released on Friday - June 24. However, the release was deferred and it has been officially announced that it will be released in theatres in July.
After a long wait, the Cobra team finally revealed the official theatrical release of their venture. Chiyaan Vikram, which will be seen in 20 different avatars, is the most interesting aspect, and he is said to play a mathematical genius in this film. Similarly, cricketer Irfan Pathan plays an important role alongside Vikram. This is set to beat Kamal Haasan’s record of appearing in 10 different roles in the movie Dasavatharam. On August 11, Cobra will be locked in theatres as per the announcement. Hold on, one more interesting factor is that AR Rahman has composed music for Cobra.
Vishal will be seen in the next movie of debut director Vinod Kumar's 'Laththi'. Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the music for the film, which will be released in five languages - Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi and this is Vishal's first film to be released in five languages. It has been announced that Laththi will be released on August 12. Sunaina will be paired with Vishal in the film.
Dhanush had his recent releases on OTT with 'Jagame Thanthiram' on Netflix and' Maaran' on Disney+ Hotstar. He awaits the release of the Hollywood movie 'The Gray Man' helmed by the Russo brothers on Netflix. So the theatrical release of his upcoming film 'Thiruchitrambalam' directed by Mitran Jawahar, who previously worked for Dhanush's 'Yaradi Nee Mohini', 'Kutty' and 'Uthamaputhiran', has created huge excitement among fans. The film has been slated for a theatrical release on 18 August. It is bankrolled by Kalanithi Maran under his banner 'Sun Pictures'. Notably, the movie team released a single 'Thai Kelavi' on Friday -June 24 which received great views.
Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu
What was previously named 'Nadhigalilae Neeradum Suriyan' has been changed to ‘Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu’. After a blockbuster comeback through 'Maanaadu', Simbu is been in this outing with Gautham Vasudev Menon. The movie also stars Siddhi Idnani, Raadhika Sarathkumar, Siddique, Neeraj Madhav, and Angelina Abraham. With AR Rahman composing the music, the teaser of this rustic thriller was released last December and the movie will be expected to hit the screens on August 18, clashing with Dhanush's 'Thiruchitrambalam'.
Through Viruman, Karthi and director Muthaiya had a second collaboration after seven years. Their previous project was the 2015 hit rural entertainer, Komban. Karthi has returned to Madurai for the first time in14 years after Paruthiveeran. Aditi Shankar, the daughter of filmmaker Shankar, will make her acting debut in Viruman. Rajkiran, Prakash Raj, RK Suresh, Manoj, and Soori also play important roles in the film. Viruman is a rural-based mass entertainer set in Madurai. The movie team has planned for the release on the occasion of 'Ganesh Chathurthi' and Viruman may encounter a clash with Sivakarthikeyan's tentatively titled SK20.
After 'Teddy', director Shakthi Soundar Rajan and Arya once again joined hands and now they are coming out with their next film titled 'Captain'. The work around the film has been progressing at a steady speed. Now, the latest is that the Red Giant Movies has acquired the theatrical rights of 'Captain' in Tamil Nadu, and the film is set for release on September 8 this year. It has a star cast that includes Arya, Simran, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Harish Uthaman, and Kavya Shetty among others while D Imman is composing the music.
Ponniyin Selvan 1:
The biggest of all of the cited movies in the list is Manirathnam's magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan Part 1'. The film has an ensemble cast of Chiyaan Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Prabhu, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Rahman and Ashwin among many other popular cine faces in the country. Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has scored the music for this humongous and dream project.
As per announced reports, the film has been slated to release on 30 September 2022. As the film is based during the period of the Chola rule, the movie team has earlier planned to release the teaser on 7th July in Thanjavur, the former Chola dynasty, as an honour. However, the movie team has postponed the teaser release, and a promo for the teaser video is expected to be dropped out at that time. Insiders in Kollywood buzzed that the VFX is being cited for the delay.
