'Let's bring light to their lives': Tamil Nadu CM EPS makes a new pledge!

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has, on Monday, made a new pledge of donating his eyes after his death as part of the National Eye Donation Fortnight. Along with his pledge, he has also unveiled an online portal that would let people register their pledge to donate their eyes. 

According to the reports, the certificate issued by SV Chandrakumar, the state programme officer, Tamil Nadu State Blindness Control Society, Department of Health and Family Welfare said, "Shri. Thiru Edappadi K Palaniswami is a proud eye donor and has solemnly pledged to make his country blindness free by gifting his vision". 

The press release from the government said that the Chief Minister has also launched an online portal (https://hmis.tn.gov.in/eye-donor/), which was created by the Tamil Nadu State Blindness Control Society through which people who are willing to donate their eyes can register their pledge. 

The website has been launched with the view of creating awareness on eye donations in the state. The portal will also act as a registry of eye donors in the state. People who wish to donate their eyes can register on the portal by disclosing their details including their names, phone numbers, residential address, and email address. After they register, they can be able to download the certificate of commitment and they would also be receiving the certificate on their registered email address. 

The official release said that the Chief Minister pledged to donate his eyes and he has signed the form for eye donation and he was presented with the certificate by Tamil Nadu Principal Health Secretary Radhakrishnan. It further stated that this initiative will be helpful in using a donor's eyes at the right time as they would be handed over to the eye bank. The Chief Minister's pledge to donate his eyes and launch of the new portal have come as part of the National Eye Donation Fortnight. 

The National Eye Donation Fortnight is observed in India between August 25 and September 8 every year to raise awareness about the significant act of contributing one's eyesight after their death, for the benefit of others. According to the reports, nearly 68 lakh people in India suffer from corneal blindness and the majority of them are children and young persons. 

 

The platform of eye donation makes it feasible to give vision to persons through corneal transplantation. The press release stated that Tamil Nadu Health Minister Vijayabaskar, Chief Secretary Shanmugam, and Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan had participated in the occasion of launching the new portal. Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami took to Twitter and said, "The website has been launched for people who wish to donate their eyes. Let's donate our eyes and let's light the life of blind".
