Major announcement from PM Narendra Modi: Here's what he said about CBSE Class 12 board exams!

Amid anticipations about whether the CBSE Class 12 board exams will be conducted this year in light of the horrendous second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on Tuesday said that the board exams will be cancelled across the country. The Prime Minister announced the cancellation of the CBSE Class 12 board exams after a high-level meeting that was held earlier today. 

The meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister and participated by the high-level authorities during which he reviewed the situation of the pandemic and discussed the possibilities of conducting the board exams. After the meeting, he announced that it was decided to cancel the exams owing to the pandemic. The CBSE had on April 14 announced the cancellation of class 10 exams and postponement of class 12 exams in view of the surge in the COVID-19 cases. 

After deferring the board exams, the Ministry of Education has sought detailed suggestions from all states regarding conducting the Class 12 board exams. The suggestions from the states had played a pivotal role in the Center's final decision of cancelling the CBSE Class 12 board exams. After cancelling the exams, the Prime Minister said that the decision on Class 12 CBSE exams has been taken in the interest of students.

He said, "Health and safety of our students are of utmost importance and there would be no compromise on this aspect. Anxiety among students, parents, and teachers, which must be put to an end." "Students should not be forced to appear for exams in such a stressful situation and all stakeholders need to show sensitivity for students", the Prime Minister added. 

According to the press release issued by the government, the Prime Minister said, "The Covid situation is a dynamic situation across the country. While the numbers are coming down in the country and some states are managing the situation through effective micro-containment, some states have still opted for a lockdown. Students, parents, and teachers are naturally worried about the health of the students in such a situation." 

Narendra Modi highlighted that in today's time, such exams cannot be a reason to put the students at risk and the Prime Minister has directed officials to ensure that results are prepared in accordance with well-defined criteria, in a fair and time-bound manner. Referring to the wide consultative process, PM expressed appreciation that a student-friendly decision has been reached after consulting all stakeholders from across the length and breadth of India. He also thanked the States for providing feedback on this issue.

The press release has added, "It was also decided that like last year, in case some students desire to take the exams, such an option would be provided to them by CBSE, as and when the situation becomes conducive." The decision of cancelling the exams has taken into view of the uncertain conditions due to COVID and the feedback obtained from various stakeholders. During the meeting, it was also decided that CBSE will take steps to compile the results of class XII students as per well-defined objective criteria. 

The Prime Minister had chaired a review meeting regarding the Class XII Board exams of CBSE and the officials gave a detailed presentation on the wide and extensive consultation held so far and views received from all stakeholders, including state governments. The press release has said that various options for the conduct of CBSE examinations were discussed in the meeting and feedback obtained from the States and UTs.

The meeting was attended by the Union Ministers of Home Defence, Finance, Commerce, Information and Broadcasting, Petroleum and Women and Child Development Ministries and Principal Secretary to PM, Cabinet Secretary and Secretaries of School Education and Higher Education Departments, and other officials. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal didn't attend the meeting as he was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi due to post-Covid complications. 

Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter and wrote, "Government of India has decided to cancel the Class XII CBSE Board Exams. After extensive consultations, we have taken a decision that is student-friendly, one that safeguards the health as well as future of our youth."
