'My father was a devotee of Karunanidhi': OPS hails DMK when EPS fights MK Stalin!

ADMK Coordinator and former Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has seemingly been exercising a sudden precipice towards the rival DMK by displaying his full support to the MK Stalin administration. He had explicitly praised a senior DMK Minister and welcomed MK Stalin's announcement in the assembly in the midst of the ADMK legislators. The gesture from the ADMK leader had come days after the party had protested against the Stalin regime and boycotted the assembly session to show its objection over what the ADMK claimed was the DMK's attempt to trap the leaders in the Kodanad heist case.

On Monday, the assembly had adopted a resolution to commend senior DMK Minister Duraimurugan for completing his fifty years of service in the assembly. Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister MK Stalin said that Duraimurugan has occupied the place of Kalaignar Karunanidhi and Anbalagan (the long time general secretary of DMK, who demised last year). MK Stalin has called Duraimurugan a 'hero of Golden Jubilee' and his remarks had made Duraimurugan break down in tears.

Following MK Stalin's address, ADMK leader and Deputy Opposition Leader O Panneerselvam said, "I have been watching Duraimurugan's work in the assembly since 2001 and he is a person of the higher soul and earned unparalleled affection from Karunanidhi. Duraimurugan, who has won everyone's heart, poses to be antecedent on how the legislators must serve in the assembly and I wish him to have a healthy life." Panneerselvam has taken the DMK leaders to surprise through his gesture and words of complimenting Duraimurugan.

On Tuesday, Panneerselvam had kept his tale of hailing the DMK and he went on to say that his father is a big devotee of late DMK President Karunanidhi. According to reports, the Tamil Nadu government had on Tuesday announced that it will build a memorial for Karunanidhi at Marina Beach in Chennai at an estimated cost of Rs 39 crore. Chief Minister MK Stalin had announced it in the assembly and said that his father Karunanidhi had remained in public life for 80 years.

MK Stalin has said that Karunanidhi was a versatile personality who shined in the Tamil cinema with his dialogues and was a member of the state assembly for 60 years. Stalin further stated that there was no leader like Karunanidhi in the past and nobody will be there in the future to attain such a feat. He announced that the memorial will be built on 2.21 acres of land in the Anna Memorial premises, where he was laid to rest following his demise on August 7, 2018.

Speaking at the assembly after the announcement of building a memorial to Karunanidhi, ADMK leader O Panneerselvam had welcomed the announcement. He said, "I welcome the historical announcement of building a memorial for Karunanidhi. I demand to the government that the memorial should be placed with the achievements and highlights of Karunanidhi's life." Panneerselvam went on to say that his father was a staunch devotee of Karunanidhi and that he would always have a dialogue written by Karunanidhi in 'Parasakthi' movie with him.

It was in fact the first time that Panneerselvam apparently said that his father was a devotee of Karunanidhi and as an ADMK leader, he has welcomed the announcement of building a memorial to Karunanidhi. It must be noted that it was the previous ADMK regime that refused the DMK to laid Karunanidhi to rest in Marina Beach. The DMK had then fought a legal battle and finally, the court has permitted to laid Karunanidhi to rest on the beach behind the memorial of former Chief Minister CN Annadurai, whom Karunanidhi would call as his elder brother.

When Edappadi Palaniswami is fighting against MK Stalin both in and out of the assembly, Panneerselvam tends to remain in a soft voice while speaking about the DMK. On Tuesday, MK Stalin had taken to Twitter and shared an image of how the memorial will look like. Apart from Panneerselvam, the reports say that no other top ADMK leader had hailed the DMK's announcement of building a memorial to Karunanidhi.
