The worldwide premiere of Ajithkumar's Thunivu took place at 1 AM on January 11th, meeting the high expectations of the film's devout followers. The film was directed by H. Vinoth Thunivu and produced by Boney Kapoor to coincide with the debut of the Vijay-starring Varisu. The dedicated fans gathered in front of a Chennai theatre on Pongal to watch their idol on silver screens.  Roused by the clamour of the crackers, they danced with embrace on the FDFS show on Wednesday.

According to industry insiders, Thunivu will earn close to Rs 27 crore in Tamil Nadu when the day one ends. Manju Warrier plays the lead role in Thunivu. Following Dhanush's Asuran, this is the Malayalam actress's second Tamil film. Due to the actor's anti-hero performance, the film captivated more than its fair number of moviegoers.

Fans took to Twitter, sharing and posting visuals of their favourite bits of the premiere, with some even relishing with the show back to back. The Twitterati appear to be pleased with the film's screenplay and the unexpected turns it takes. Popular critic wrote, "#Thunivu - 3 out of 5, first half is a bonafide thriller , second half in Shankar’s Socio commentary zone . With #Ajith’s presence, more people will know about bank scams. #AK’s one man show with impressive action sequences"

The film stars Manju Warrier, John Kokkhen, Nayana Sai, GM Sundar, Mahanadi Shankar, Samuthirakani, Bhagwati Perumal Ajay and Veera. Cinematography by Nirav Shah. Gibran has composed the music.  The film is backed by Boney Kapoor's Bayview Projects and Zee Studios. Netflix has acquired the streaming rights of Thunivu and Kalaignar TV has purchased the satellite rights.
