Omicron variant soars in India...Fear of cluster as Dharavi reports its first case!

The Omicron Covid-19 variant is making move across India as the cases have been soaring in the territory. It's not even a month since Omicron was identified in the world and it has made its entry into several countries. Though the variant is spreading rapidly, the experts say that it is not posing a severe threat as fatalities caused by Omicron remain low and the infection only leads to mild symptoms. 

According to reports, the total number of Omicron cases detected in India rose to 32 so far as of December 10 and the country had recorded seven new cases on December 10 alone with Maharashtra reporting a heavy caseload. Shockingly, the congested area of Dharavi has reported its first Omicron case on Friday, which has led to the fear of more clusters in Maharashtra following Dharavi, which is considered to be one of Asia's largest slums. The first case in Dharavi had a travel history of arriving from Tanzania. 

Mumbai Municipal Corporation has said that the positive case wasn't vaccinated and that he didn't show any positive symptoms. He has now been hospitalized and the development has poured a whammy to the Maharashtra government as containing the Covid-19 pandemic in Dharavi had been challenging during the first and second waves. Earlier, the Union Health Ministry has noted that mild symptoms were recorded in all Omicron cases. 

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said Omicron is not posing a burden clinically on the healthcare system yet but the vigil has to be maintained. At a joint press briefing on Friday concerning the 25 cases reported till Thursday, the government said that of those 25 cases, ten were from Maharashtra, nine from Rajasthan, three from Gujarat, two from Karnataka, and one in Delhi. Maharashtra's tally had gone up to 17 so far with the seven new cases that were reported on Friday. 

At the press briefing, Joint Secretary of the Union Health Ministry Lav Agarwal said, "Mainly mild symptoms have been seen in the cases of Omicron variant detected so far." He further said 2,936 cases of the new variant have been found in 59 countries so far and about 78,064 probable cases are presently under testing and genome sequencing and he added that meetings are being held regularly to keep a watch on the global scenario and examine the situation in the country.
