Popular Kollywood director passes away due to COVID-19!

In a shocking development, popular Kollywood director Thamira has passed away on Tuesday in Chennai at the age of 53 due to the COVID-19 viral infection. His demise has become one of the crucial deaths that the Tamil cinema industry had encountered due to the pandemic. The director was admitted to a private hospital in the city three weeks ago and he never left the hospital. 

Sheik Dawood was the real name of Thamira and he tested positive for the pandemic earlier this month post which he was rushed to Maya Nursing Home in Chennai. He had been battling for survival for the past three weeks and he breathed his last in the morning hours of Tuesday. Ever since the news of his demise broke out, several notable people in the Tamil industry have been paying their tributes and expressing their condolences to the family members of the deceased. 

In a press release on Tuesday, Maya Nursing Home said, "Patient Sheik Dawood, 53 years old, male got admitted on 07.04.2021 morning with severe COVID-19 pneumonia. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit directly with severe respiratory distress and with oxygen levels of 80% on room air. He was on the ventilator for the past 20 days and on 27.04.2021 morning at 8.20 am, he developed sudden cardiac arrest and was declared dead. He was tested and turned to be negative for COVID-19 on 13.04.2021". 

Thamira is popularly known for his work with reputed director K Balachander and he made his directorial debut with 'Rettaisuzhi', which is produced by Shankar. The film was released in 2010 and it was starred by K Balachander, Bharathiraja, Aari, and Anjali. The movie had received positive critic for bringing together two veteran directors. Thamira's second movie 'Aan Devathai' was released in 2018 and the movie starred Samuthirakani and Ramya Pandian in the lead. 

He was close to veteran director Bharathiraja and after knowing his demise, Bharathiraja had paid tribute to the deceased filmmaker. Taking to Twitter, Bharathiraja wrote, "I'm shocked by the demise of affectionate Thamira, who relished on making me act with KB (K. Balachander) in Rettaisuzhi, due to novel coronavirus. My deepest condolences to Thamira's family." Producer Dhananjayan had also expressed shock at the demise of Thamira. 

Taking to Twitter, Dhananjayan wrote, "Absolutely shocking to hear. Very sad. Life is becoming very short for many. Director #Thamira is a fine gentleman & a good friend. Unable to accept these losses. #RIPThamira sir. You will be badly missed by us. Condolences to his family. Take care friends. Be safe". The development has come when Tamil Nadu has been recording an unprecedented rise in the COVID-19 cases as the sequel of the second wave.

On Monday, the state has reported 15,684 fresh COVID-19 cases of which 4,250 cases belong to Chennai. The state has also reported 13,625 discharges and 94 deaths on Monday. According to the state health department, Tamil Nadu has reported 10,97,672 cases so far as of Monday of which 1,07,145 are active, 9,76,876 have been discharged, and 13,651 people had succumbed to the viral infection.
