Pudhupettai 2: Selvaraghavan opens about the ambitious sequel to his 2006 gangster saga

Selvaraghavan’s Pudhupettai, a gritty and realistic portrayal of the rise and fall of a slum-dwelling gangster, have been eagerly waiting for the sequel to the 2006 cult classic. The director, who is known for his unconventional and bold films, announced in 2019 that he was working on the script of Pudhupettai 2, which would feature his brother and actor Dhanush reprising his role as Kokki Kumar, who became a crime lord due to fate circumstances.

However, since then, there has been no official update on the project, leaving the fans wondering about its status. Recently, Selvaraghavan took to his social media account to share some good news with his followers. He wrote, “Hopefully PUDHUPETTAI 2 should happen this year.” This has sparked a lot of excitement and speculation among the fans, who are hoping to see the sequel on the big screen soon.

Pudhupettai, which was released in 2006, was a critical and commercial success and is widely regarded as one of the cult gangster films in Tamil cinema. The film starred Dhanush, Sonia Agarwal and Sneha in the lead roles, and featured a riveting soundtrack by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

The film narrates the story of Kumar, a young boy who runs away from his abusive father and joins a gang of criminals, eventually becoming a powerful and feared mob boss in North Chennai. The film explored the themes of violence, corruption, betrayal, and survival in a ruthless world.

Selvaraghavan, who has also directed acclaimed films like Kadhal Kondein, 7G Rainbow Colony, and Aayirathil Oruvan, has said that Pudhupettai 2 will be a bigger and better version of the original, and will showcase the evolution of Kumar’s character and his empire. Fans are dwelling with Tinseltown's murmurings which states that the sequel will have a political angle, as Kumar will face new challenges and enemies in his quest for power.

Meanwhile, Dhanush, who won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Asuran, is busy with multiple projects in his kitty. He is currently shooting for DNS, a bilingual film directed by Sekhar Kammula, which also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Nagarjuna in key roles.

He is both directing and acting in Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam, a romantic comedy, and has successfully wrapped up D50, a thrilling project which he also directed.He is also last seen in Captain Miller directed by Arun Matheswaran, and also currently busy with Tere Ishk Mein, a Hindi film directed by Aanand L. Rai.

The official details about Pudhupettai 2’s cast and crew are yet to be announced, but the fans are hoping that the film will retain the original team and the essence of the first part. Pudhupettai 2 is expected to be one of the most anticipated and ambitious films of Selvaraghavan, who has a loyal fan base for his unique and daring style of filmmaking.
