Race to the IPL Playoffs: How Super Sunday had become a gamechanger?

With Chennai Super Kings ending the Kings XI Punjab's dream of entering the playoffs with a victory in the first match of the day, it was Kolkata Knight Riders that took on the Rajasthan Royals in a crucial second game on Super Sunday, as the IPL 2020 has reached the final stage. Rajasthan Royals won the toss and decided to bowl first. With Nitish Rana getting out for a duck, Shubman Gill was displaying some good form scoring 36 runs from 24 balls.  Rahul Tripathi too played a good innings of 39 runs.

With Sunil Narine and Dinesh Karthik falling for a duck, skipper Morgan was the star. He, along with Andre Russell attacked the bowlers of Rajasthan Royals after the KKR lost 5 wickets for less than 100 runs.

When the KKR innings got escalated with some firepower, Andre Russell got out at a crucial time. But Morgan never gave up. He smashed 5 fours and 6 sixes to score a fantastic 68 from just 35 deliveries. The lone battle of Morgan, a successful one, took the Kolkata Knight Riders to a grand total of 191 runs in their 20 overs.

It was a collapse for the Rajasthan Royals batting lineup right from the beginning. They started fearlessly by scoring 19 runs in the first five balls of the first over. And after that, things changed dramatically. They lost the wickets of Uthappa, Stokes, Smith, Samson, and Parag for just 37 runs. Pat Cummins was in terrific form picking up 4 wickets out of the five.

Dinesh Karthik took a magnificent catch to dismiss Ben Stokes and it was one of the defining moments of the match. Just Buttler and Rahul Tewatia tried to do some damage control but they couldn't last long. Both were dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy.

The Rajasthan Royals eventually lost the game by 60 runs and it was a huge defeat for a team that has consistently performed well. Both the teams were looking to claim those two important points to secure a chance of entering the playoffs and it was the Kolkata Knight Riders who had succeeded in it. This IPL is so unique as it keeps the playoff hopes of all the teams except the CSK alive till the last moment. It is going to be a lot more interesting in the days to come to see who grabs the top four spots in the points table.

At the current state, Mumbai Indians are the only team that reserved a berth in the playoffs after securing 18 points with standing first on the table. Super Sunday has become a gamechanger as the results had shuffled the points, which had become crucial for writing the climax.

With the defeat against the Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab had ended their campaign by witnessing their hope of entering the playoffs was busted while the match against the Royals and Knight Riders was important for both the teams, and as Riders washed out the Royals, the latter was pushed to the bottom of the table while CSK was elevated to one step ahead and currently standing at the seventh spot. The current season is still two matches away to witness the climax of who is going to enter the playoffs.
