Remembering National awardee late singer Bhavatharani: The songbird of melancholy takes her final flight

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the music world bids farewell to the incredibly talented singer Bhavatharani, daughter of legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja. The enchanting voice that captivated millions and adorned numerous soundtracks came to a silent rest on January 25, 2024, as Bhavatharani succumbed to cancer in Sri Lanka.

Bhavatharani, following in the footsteps of her illustrious father, carved her own niche in the music industry. With a voice that could both soothe and stir the soul, she lent her vocals to a plethora of songs across various languages, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of music lovers.

Her musical journey began under the tutelage of the maestro himself, Ilaiyaraaja, who recognized and nurtured her prodigious talent. Bhavatharini was born into a family of musicians and made her debut as a playback singer in 1984 with Malayalam movie My Dear Kuttichaathan, composed by her father, and debuted in Tamil film En Bommukutty Ammavukku.

She also won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2000 for her song “Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu” in the biopic movie Bharathi, also composed by her father. Bhavatharani effortlessly transitioned from playback singing to composing, showcasing her versatility in the realm of music creation,  including Mitr, My Friend, directed by actor Revathi and Phir Milenge, also directed by Revathi, starring Shilpa Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan and Salman Khan.

She also carved a name by lending her voice for the first Indian oratorio ever, Thiruvasakam in Symphony, composed by her father Ilayaraja. She is notable for her songs, Aathadi Aathadi from Anegan, Meherezylaa from Maanadu, Nee Naan from Mankatha, Thaaliyae Thevaiyillai from Thamirabharani, Ennai Thalatta from Kaathaluku Mariyathai, Thendral Varum from Friends, and so on.

Her last work was settled with the song Pannapurathu from Mamanithan, starring Vijay Sethupathi, directed by Seenu Ramasamy, and released in 2022.  She is survived by her husband R. Sabariraj, father Ilayaraja,  brothers Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja, and other family members. The news of Bhavatharani's demise sent shockwaves through the music fraternity.

The singer, who had been battling cancer, breathed her last in Sri Lanka, where she had been seeking treatment. The loss is not just a blow to the industry but a poignant moment for fans who connected with her through the emotive power of her voice.
