Samson's prayer and Pant's reason behind the defeat...Who was the real hero in the victory?

The Delhi Capitals were full of confidence after defeating the Chennai Super Kings in their first game. Rishabh Pant, who assumed captaincy for the first time had defeated the mighty Dhoni-led team and it was the talking point for the next few days. On the other hand, the Royals were desperate to open their victory count and Sanju Samson badly wanted to make up for it with a convincing win, after bracing up a defeat in the first game against the Punjab Kings.

This game was always going to be interesting and it was evident from the recent form of both the teams. In what has become the seventh match of the series, the clash between the Royals and Capitals was hosted by Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to bowl first. Interestingly, most of the skippers are seemingly fond of chasing. Delhi Capitals opened their innings with Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan. What worked for Delhi against the Dhoni's fleet didn't work with the Royals as both the openers fell early.

Delhi Capitals had lost three crucial wickets within the powerplay as Rahane had followed Shaw and Dhawan to walk back to the pavilion. The pressure was on for the Capitals and skipper Rishabh Pant took the charge to rescue the team. It was Pant and only Pant who drove the team well and he had made a big score in the Delhi Capitals batting line-up. He scored 52 runs in 32 balls and it was the captain's knock, and of course, a vital knock, without any doubt.

Tom Curran and Lalit Yadav had scored 21 runs and 20 runs respectively towards the end, to pillar Pant's campaign in putting a decent score on the board while Marcus Stoinis got out for a duck.  The real star was Jaydev Unadkat from the Rajasthan Royals as he picked up 3 wickets in a brilliant bowling spell. Mustafizur Rahman picked up 2 wickets and it was yet another low scoring day as the Delhi Capitals crumbled for 147 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 20 overs. 148 looked like a very simple target for the Rajasthan Royals.

Though it was an easy chase on the card, the Royals made it complicated as it was a disastrous start for Samson's team as they lost 4 quick wickets. The Royals too lost three wickets within the powerplay and they had lost five wickets in 42 runs. The game was largely going under the control of the Delhi Capitals until the landfall of a storm. David Miller was the man that the team looked up for the rescue and he perfectly delivered what was expected from him.

It was a mind-blowing knock from the South-African batsman during such a difficult situation. He scored 62 runs from 43 balls and got out at the wrong time when his team still required more than 40 runs to win. When almost everyone lost hope on the chase, it was Chris Morris who took control and played match-winning innings. When Miller walked out of the crease, his fellow countryman has taken the baton and Morris was all alone but fearless.

In the climax, Morris twisted the tale by smashing four brilliant sixes and took the control of the game. With four imperative sixes, his knock of 36 runs from 18 balls secured a great victory for the Rajasthan Royals by 3 wickets. The Royals chased the target with two balls remaining and it has become one of the remarkable chases in the current edition. With a splendid victory, Sanju Samson's fleet had finally taken a breath of relief and hope as they had opened the account in the victory card.

The Royals had reached the target by losing seven wickets and Jaydev Unadkat was named the player of the match. It's undeniable that Morris was the real hero in this victory. With the victory, the Royals stand at fifth place in the IPL points table while the Capitals secured fourth place with their net run rate. RR's skipper Sanju Samson had admitted that he didn't expect a win after their side had lost five wickets for 40 runs in the chase.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Samson said, "To be very honest, I thought that it was tough from 40 for 5. We had Miller and Morris, but I thought it was tough. I think the boys did really well to get over the line. I was just praying for Morris to get one six." "It (pitch) was a bit sticky to start with. Hard lengths and mixing up with the variations was the key. That's also our strength - three left-armers. They are slightly different from the other so we can use it in a different way", Samson added.

After conceding the defeat, Rishabh Pant had admitted that his team let the opposition get over them, as the reason for the defeat, and said that the DC bowlers could have done a better job. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Pant said, "The (DC) bowlers did a good job at the start, but we let them get over us in the end. We could have bowled a bit better. It's part and parcel of the game and dew played a big role in the end. We were 15-20 runs short. But at least there is something to gain from this match, the bowlers did a great job at the start." "Hopefully if something like this happens, we can pull it off. In the second innings, there was much more dew, so the slower ball wasn't stopping. So, we had to do something in the second innings", he added.
