Second capital in TN: Madurai or Trichy? Here's what CM EPS said

Following the opinions and retorts of senior Tamil Nadu ministers on who will be the next Chief Ministerial candidate of the ADMK party in 2021 elections that met with huge controversies and intra-party furor, the ministers have recently caught up with the second round of controversy through bringing back the debate of the second capital of Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar had brought up the debate by stating that his hometown Madurai must be declared as the second capital city of Tamil Nadu. Udhayakumar's claim was supported by Tamil Nadu Cooperatives Minister Sellur Raju, as he is also a native of Madurai. Sellur Raju represents the Madurai West Assembly constituency while Udhayakumar is an MLA of Sattur in Virudhunagar district.

After two senior ministers advocated the state government to declare Madurai as the second capital city of Tamil Nadu, the ADMK party members of the southern district had adopted a resolution and demanded the Chief Minister to set up the committee and analyze the possibilities of naming Madurai as the second capital.

However, following the ministers' remarks of naming their home city as the companion for Chennai, another senior minister Vellamandi Natarajan, who is the minister for tourism, had said that his hometown of Trichy must be made as the second capital of Tamil Nadu. Natarajan is the sitting legislator of Trichy East constituency and he urged the state government to declare Trichy as the second capital.

Local political leaders of Trichy and leaders of other groups like the Cauvery Delta Farmers Association backed Minister Natarajan and said that Trichy must be declared as the second capital of the state. As the ministers stirred speculations over the second capital, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had dotted up the speculations by asserting that the government has no such plans.

While addressing the reporters at Dharmapuri on Thursday, the Chief Minister said that the government has no such plans of declaring the second capital and stated that the remarks from the ministers are their own opinions and not the government's stance. According to the recent reports, 14 district trade unions of the Tamil Nadu trade union had held a discussion on Friday in demanding the government to announce Madurai as the second capital.

Minister Udhayakumar took part in the event and said that the need has emerged now to declare Madurai as the second capital city and he also backed minister Vellamandi Natarajan's call for declaring Trichy as the second capital and said that he has a right to place his opinion.
