Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi has tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection on Thursday and the development has come at a high time when the state is just a week ahead of the assembly elections in which the state ruling BJP has been hoping to retain the power.

Modi has become one of the national leaders who had contracted to the pandemic. The Deputy Chief Minister, who was at the campaign trail campaigning for the party, took to Twitter and issued conformity that he had spelled positive for the viral infection. He also stated that he has been admitted to AIIMS Patna and will be back soon for campaigning.

In his Twitter message, Sushil Kumar Modi said, "Tested positive for CORONA. All parameters perfectly normal. Started with a mild temp for the last 2 days. Admitted to AIIMS Patna for better monitoring.CT scan of lungs normal. Will be back soon for campaigning". The shocking development has come hours after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had released the BJP's election manifesto for Bihar.

Sushil Kumar Modi has taken part in the campaigns across the state and recently, on Sunday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Sushil Kumar Modi had participated in the joint election campaign that was attended by thousands of people and Modi has also appeared for an election rally on the same day, ahead of the legislative assembly polls.

As he had tested positive, the reports say that all of his close contacts including the Chief Minister and senior party leaders would be tested for COVID-19 and would be isolated and the development is expected to majorly hit the BJP in the campaign when the state elections are just days away. Bihar elections will be held in three phases and the state will vote to elect a new assembly that consists of 243 constituencies. The elections will be held on October 28, November 3, and November 7 and the results will be declared on November 10.

On Thursday, BJP had released the election manifesto for the Bihar elections in which it had promised to provide free COVID-19 vaccination for every person in the state if it wins the election. The Union Finance Minister said, "As soon as COVID-19 vaccine is available for production at a mass scale every person in Bihar will get a free vaccination. This is the first promise mentioned in our poll manifesto". The BJP had asserted that its ally JD(U) Chief Nitish Kumar will be Chief Minister for the next five years.
