'Shatter that silence': How Jyothika's movie had brought out the abuse faced by a 9-year-old girl in Chennai?

Jyothika starred 'Ponmagal Vandhal' is again back to the mainstream after the movie team has had a moment where the movie had inspired a minor girl to come out and break her silence about what she faced. The development has come on Saturday and Jyothika took to Instagram and put a note of encouraging the women to speak out by shattering their silence. 

According to reports, a 9-year-old child, a resident of Broadway, Chennai had watched Jyothika starred 'Ponmagal Vandhal' last year. For some time, she was living was at one of her relatives' house and she was then taken to her home by her mother and while she was watching the movie at her home, she got inspired by a dialogue 'Whatever happens, you should inform to your mother'. After listening to this dialogue, this minor child ran to her mother and broke her silence and revealed that she was sexually harassed by a relative.

She also had shared the identities of the relative who abused her and her mother was shocked to know about the incident. She then filed a complaint with the Royapuram All Women's Police Station. The case was filed against the relative under the POCSO Act and after the hearing, the 48-year-old accused relative was awarded a five-year prison sentence along with a penalty of Rs 5,000.

Sharing the news that the accused was sentenced to incarceration after the minor girl had broken her silence, Jyothika took to Instagram and wrote, "Shatter that silence! Each time a woman stands up for herself, unknowingly she stands up for all women." Several social media users had also commended Jyothika for encouraging women to speak up against the abuses they face.

It has become one of the incidents where a movie can play a role in exhuming the fact and 'Pommagal Vandhal' had given a significant breakthrough for Jyothika in her commitment to acting in women-centric movies and voicing against injustices and discrimination. Produced by Suriya, Ponmagal Vandhal was directed by JJ Fredrick and it was released in 2020 on Amazon Prime Video, one of the first Tamil movies to premiere in the OTT in wake of the shut down of the theatres.

While Jyothika has played the lead role, Bhagyaraj, Parthiban, Thiyagarajan, Pratap Pothan, and Pandiarajan had played important roles. The plot of the movie revolves around a lawyer who reopens a notorious 15-year-old case of a dead killer, alleged to have kidnapped and murdered young girls. During the plot, the story touches upon the crimes faced by women and how they were silenced.
