A shelter at Saffron: Former Congress Chief Minister is all set to join BJP!

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh (80), who quit Congress, is all set to take a new political shelter as he will be joining the BJP on Monday - September 19 and will be merging his party with the Central ruling party. While Amarinder's political equation could cause a setback for Congress in Punjab, he will be a weapon for the BJP in attacking the growing base of Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, which currently rules the state.

Singh will be joining the BJP nearly a year after quitting the Congress following a political crisis that pushed him to step down from the post of Chief Minister ahead of the Punjab assembly polls. There had been an internal tussle in the Congress party's Punjab unit and after quitting the Congress, Amarinder Singh has established a new political party - Punjab Lok Congress.

After ending his five-decade association with the Congress, Amarinder Singh turned out to be a staunch critic of the Gandhis and when he launched the new party, it was speculated that he was getting close to the BJP. It is now apparent that Singh is ready for fresh political innings and ahead of joining the BJP, he met with BJP National President JP Nadda.

According to reports, seven former Congress MLAs and one former MP will also join the BJP along with Amarinder Singh. In the Punjab assembly polls, Singh formed an alliance with the BJP but he didn't have the expected political breakthrough as he lost the race in his home-turf Patiala Urban while all the candidates from his party had lost the polls.

Amarinder Singh recently returned from London after spinal surgery. Last week, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. It was reported that Singh's meeting with Amit Shah was productive as they discussed the subjects like national security, surging cases of narcoterrorism in Punjab, and the roadmap for the state's development.

Before departing for London, Amarinder Singh expressed his desire to merge his party with the BJP and after he returned, he chalked out the plans for the merger that would be unfolded on Monday. Amarinder Singh will be joining the BJP in the presence of JP Nadda in Delhi as his new political innings have drawn nationwide attention in the midst of similar blows faced by the Congress in several states.

Amarinder Singh was a two-time Chief Minister of Punjab and he belongs to the former Patiala royal family. After his exit from the party, Congress appointed Charanjit Singh Channi as the Chief Minister and faced elections under his rule. However, Congress faced a huge setback in the polls held this February as Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party registered a landslide victory in the state and Bhagwant Singh Mann has become the new Chief Minister.
