From Shikhar Dhawan to Jayam Ravi: Celebs demand justice for Jayaraj and Fenix!

The massive outrage and voices for demanding justice for the custodial deaths of a father and son in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu have got bigger attention from the political parties and celebrities, as the stronger, the voices are growing, the higher it has been reaching to demand justice and an end to such custodial deaths.

Tamil Nadu has been witnessing a fierce grounds over the deaths of 58-year-old Jayaraj and his son 31-year-old Fenix under the police custody as people from various backgrounds have been sending solidarity to the family members of the duo and urging stern actions against the responsible officers who were connected to what has been dubbed as police brutality. 

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu traders union had observed strike across the state by shutting down the shops to condemn the police action against the duo and to demand the government to deliver justice. Along with the traders union, several opposition parties in the state including DMK and Communists had strongly reprimanded the custodial deaths and the excessive use of police force amid the lockdown. 

 

The massive outrage in the state against the dreadful incident had drawn national attention. On Friday, Indian Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan took to Twitter and condemn the incident. The reputed batsman said "Horrified to hear about the brutality inflicted upon Jeyaraj & Fenix in Tamil Nadu. We must raise our voice and make sure justice is given to the family". The cricketer's voice has become one of the early voices among the celeb fraternity. 

 

Along with Dhawan, Tamil actor Jayam Ravi has also shared his voice of demanding justice for the father and son duo. He took to Twitter and said, "#JusticeForJeyarajAndFenix No one is above the law, justice must be done for this inhuman act". Apart from Jayam Ravi, stars like Khushbu Sundar, Karthik Subbaraj, Pa. Ranjith, Imman, and Santhanu had demanded justice. #JusticeforJeyarajandFenix has become one of the trending hashtags on Twitter in India exemplifying the nationwide resentment on the custodial deaths of the duo, who were detained by Sathankulam police department in Thoothukudi district on June 19 under the grounds that they had kept their shop open beyond the prescribed timings of the lockdown.

According to the reports, the police arrested them and detained them in the Kovilpatti sub-jail. On June 22, Fenix complained of chest pain and breathing difficulty after which he was taken to the hospital. However, he was declared dead on the same day and hours after his demise, Fenix's father Jayaraj was taken to hospital and he was also declared dead on June 23rd and the back to back deaths of father and son under police custody had spurred up the massive outrage across the state amid the Coronavirus outbreak.

 

There have been fierce protests from the opposition parties. The Madras High Court Madurai Bench had taken the matter under suo motu cognizance and hearing the case and the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had issued notice to the police department to disclose the report on the incident. The state government has suspended two police officers connected to the incident while the inspector of the Sathankulam police department has been kept under the waiting list.

The locals said that the father and son duo were thrashed by the police and they were killed under police brutality and demanded that the responsible officers must be arrested. Amid the furor-ic developments, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has, on Wednesday, said that the government will be providing compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the family of the deceased and the government would also be awarding a job for one of the family members based on the qualification.
