Shocking advertisement by a sweet shop in TN on COVID-19: See how it invited trouble!

After reportedly advertising that its herbal sweet can cure COVID-19 viral infection, a sweet shop in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu has invited trouble in return as the district administration has sealed and seized the products, leaving the shop owner to face stern action for circulating such advertisement amid reeling towards finding a scientific cure to treat the pandemic.

The advertisement has come at a crucial time when Coimbatore has been witnessing a steady rise in COVID-19 cases. According to the reports, 45-year-old Sriram owns 'Nellai Lala Sweets' and his brand has eight branches running across the Coimbatore city. When the nation is racing to find a cure, he claimed that the herbal 'Mysore Pak' prepared in his shop can cure the viral infection.

Along with making such a claim without the authorization, he reportedly marketed his claim through circulating the notice across the city and he sent a message to the residents that the herbal sweet can cure COVID-19 in a single day. The message and the notice went viral on social media. The notice further stated that the shop will deliver the herbal sweet at the doorsteps of the people affected by the virus and have shown positive symptoms.

The establishment claimed that the sweet has been made through the mixture of various herbal ingredients based on the recipe made by Sriram's ancestors who were said to be experts on Siddha medicine. The notice said that the shop is ready to disclose the formula for preparing the herbal sweet to Prime Minister Narendra Modi without any expectations in return. Sriram further revealed that he has been distributing the herbal sweet to the COVID-19 patients for the past three months.

He further avowed that the sweet has been consumed by 50 patients with diabetes and they haven't reported any side effects. However, days after circulating such an advertisement, he got trouble in return as the district health and food safety department officials have raided the shop on Wednesday based on his information. The reports stated that his shop is located in Chinniyampalayam, Coimbatore and it has currently been sealed. The authorities have seized the products from the shop.

The development has been informed to the district collector and the action would be taken against the shop owner for his claims. This has been one of such claims in curing the virus as earlier there were several claims and prescriptions across the nation which recommended cure for the viral infection although having no accreditation from the government.

The AYUSH Ministry has also warned the issuance of such illegitimate claims and the Central government said that the circulation of any kind of information related to COVID-19 on social media without the consent of the government is strictly prohibited under the Epidemic Diseases Act.
