A police officer in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu has surrendered before a police station as an accused after killing a 27-year-old woman, with whom he had an extramarital affair. The police department has filed a case against the cop-turned-murderer and taken him into custody for further investigations.

According to reports, 27-year-old Saranya, a native of Madurai, was working as a forest watcher with the Theni district forest division. She was found dead at her residence in Bodinayakanur in Theni during the wee hours of Sunday. After recovering the body, the Bodinayakanur town police had launched a probe into the death and sent the body to conduct an autopsy.

While they were investigating, 27-year-old police constable Thirumurugan had surrendered at Keeraithurai police station in Madurai by divulging that he was the one who killed Saranya. Thirumurugan is a native of Sadasivam Nagar, Thiruvallur street in Madurai and he was serving as a constable with the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion in Madurai.

He had confessed that he had murdered Saranya due to a dispute. After the initial round of questioning, the police said that Saranya and Thirumurugan had allegedly been in an illicit relationship. Saranya was married and had two children. Her husband had died a few years ago in a road accident and her children were staying with her parents and she had stayed alone in Theni.

On the other hand, Thirumurugan was also married but separated from his wife. Thirumurugan and Saranya had met each other when they both were in Madurai and developed a relationship. They had been in a relationship for some time now and on Saturday night, the couple had a dispute over their relationship and as the dispute had grown, Thirumurugan had strangled Saranya to death and fled to Madurai.

After reaching Madurai, he had surrendered to the police by confessing that he had killed Saranya after which he was taken under custody. Initially, the Bodinayakanur Town police had registered a case under section 174 - suspicious death of CrPC. However, as Thirumurugan has confessed that he had killed Saranya, the case would be alerted to murder case.
