From Silver to Gold: Will Mirabai Chanu win the Gold medal? Here's how she got a chance!

Two days after winning the Silver medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and opening India's medal tally in the world's biggest sporting event, India's weightlifting champion Mirabai Chanu has likely got a sight of the Gold medal in the weightlifting competition after the Chinese athlete, who won the Gold medal in the weightlifting, was brought under the scanner of ascertaining whether she was under the influence of a drug in winning the competition.

On Saturday, 26-year-old Manipur-born Chanu has become the first Indian Weightlifter to win the Silver medal in Olympics in the Women's 49kg category. While Chanu was placed at the second spot, China's Hou Zhihui had won the Gold medal in the category while Indonesia's Cantik Windy Aisah has won the Bronze medal. Chanu has won the Silver medal in 49kg weightlifting with a total lift of 202 kg. Chanu has also become the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari, who won the Bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Two days after winning the Silver medal, which is the only medal that India had won in the Tokyo Olympics till the time of writing this content, Chanu has seen a prospect of getting bestowed with the Gold medal after China's Hou Zhihui is set to undergo a doping test. Zhihui had set an Olympic record of lifting 210 kg while Chanu had settled for Silver by lifting 202 kg, 8 kg less than her Chinese rival. However, in an unanticipated development, Zhihui would be put under the doping test, which is an official test to discover if an athlete was under the influence of a drug to perform better.

The development had stunned the Olympic village and while the athletes who are done with their games are returning to their respective countries, Zhihui was told to stay back in Tokyo for a dope test. ANI had quoted a source saying, "She has been asked to stay in Tokyo and the test will be done. The test is definitely happening." If Zhihui fails the test after getting discovered that she was under the influence of a drug, her victory would be declared invalid and Chanu, who was behind her, would automatically go to the top and would be awarded the Gold medal.

The authorities of the Tokyo Games had asked Zhihui to undergo a doping test and the test results would be put under intense analysis before coming to a conclusion. According to reports, the anti-doping authority will check and see if Zhihui had given an undertaking for medicines before the games. Expressing her happiness after winning the Silver medal, Mirabai Chanu has said, "I am really happy on winning a silver medal in Tokyo 2020 for my country." She had posted her statement on Twitter in which she said, "It's really a dream come true for me. I would like to dedicate this medal to my country and would like to thank a billion prayers of all Indians which were with me during this journey."

"I like to thank my family especially my mother for a lot of sacrifices and believing in me. Also, special thanks to our government for supporting me, Ministry of Sports, SAI (Sports Authority of India), IOA (Indian Olympic Association), Weightlifting Federation of India, Railways, OGQ (Olympic Gold Quest), sponsors, and my marketing agency IOS for their continuous support in this journey. I would like to give special thanks to my coach Vijay Sharma sir and the support staff for their continuous hard work, motivation, and training. Thank you once again entire weightlifting fraternity and all my countrymen. Jai Hind", Chanu added in her statement.

On the other hand, apart from Chanu, India has been bracing up setbacks and disappointments from Tokyo after some of the promising Indian athletes had faced debacles as the country struggles in its medal battles. So far, India has won only one medal through Chanu. After winning the Silver medal, Chanu has on Monday arrived in India. She was given a warm welcome at the Delhi Airport as the staff members at the airport cheered for her for bringing pride to the country through her historical milestone.
